Welcome​ to Bliss: The Second Trimester



I love the second trimester. It’s the fun trimester, as far as I’m concerned. You start it knowing fully well that you are now a momma-to-be, and you finish it knowing you are going to hold a precious being in a matter of weeks.

For my second pregnancy, the second trimester was the time I had plenty of strength, and felt like I could take on the world and wouldn’t feel it. I indulged my cravings so well. I also had not ballooned so much, so I could still wear most of my regular clothes, which was a plus.

It was also the month I started to feel my babies kick…I can’t even begin to explain what that felt like. Sometimes, it would be like a war zone in there, and sometimes, I can almost say the twins were having a flirting session. But whatever the tempo of the kicks, they were surely beautiful moments.

The second trimester is great and totally makes up for the misery of the first one, and does nothing to prepare you for the impatience that will overcome you in the third trimester.

The trimester, which spans from week 13 to week 27 of pregnancy, is also called the “honeymoon period” for good reason: typically, nausea subsides, emotions even out and sex drive returns. 

Fun stuff about the second trimester.

People will start to notice

This is fun, because now they’ll start doing things like giving you seats in crowded places and holding doors for you and generally treating you like a precious cargo, which you are.

It can be infuriating. I found it a bit patronising but with the benefits of hindsight, it’s really not that bad. After all, you are doing mankind a favour, so they should treat you as precious.

The nausea subsides
God be praised, most women get some relief from morning sickness as they enter the second trimester, or it stops completely. If you’re still feeling queasy, talk to your doctor about increasing your intake of vitamin B6, which has been known to settle the stomach.

You may feel your baby move for the first time

This is 100 percent as thrilling as it sounds. And in just a few short weeks you will enter a period of life during which you will enjoy a nightly viewing of the skin of your belly do a jig.

After the baby’s heartbeat has been detected, the next thing is movement, a physical signal that your baby is thriving.

Between 16 and 20 weeks, you’ll start to feel your baby move around inside you, known as “quickening.”

Toward the end of the trimester, you might also feel repeated “blips” in your abdomen. Don’t worry. That’s just your baby having completely harmless hiccups!

Sex drive will return

Interestingly, you may even find yourself wanting to have sex more than usual. You have the increased blood flow to the pertinent areas to thank for that high libido.

And since the first trimester’s nausea and fatigue have tapered off, you might feel more aroused. Some women even experience multiple orgasms for the first time during this trimester.

It’s an exciting time; one of the most exciting times of your life. Enjoy it.  

Emotional changes
Although your hormones are still in overdrive, your body’s had three months to adjust to them, so you might actually tame your emotions enough to make it through a tear-jerker commercial without crying.

Not so fantastic aspects of second trimester:

Bad dreams
As your baby becomes more “real” to you, your dreams might become more startling. Giving birth to some kind of supernatural baby is a common theme in expectant moms’ dreams during the second trimester. So don’t freak out if you wake up in a cold sweat. It’s normal to feel a little anxious.

Your changing shape
By week 16, you will likely be wearing maternity clothes due to your expanding waistline and widening hips. By week 27, you should have gained some weight, but your baby will only account for a small amount of this. You’ll also probably start to see another pregnancy phenomenon: stretch marks. Most will fade to nearly invisible silver or white streaks after you give birth.

Around this time, you’ll start to experience a new discomfort in the tummy: abdominal aches, a result of your growing uterus and the stretching of the surrounding ligaments.

On the flip side, as your shape changes, you may worry more about the long-term effects that pregnancy may have on your body. To beat the body blues:

Buy a cute outfit.

Treat yourself to a beauty boost, like a manicure for your newly strong-and-long nails.

Revel in how great you feel now, because the third trimester is on the way!

At this stage of pregnancy, even mundane activities like walking to the bathroom might make you feel out of breath. It’s perfectly normal. As the uterus grows, it crowds the lungs, making it a little harder for air to flow in and out. Try to take it easy, but if you find that your shortness of breath becomes more severe, see your doctor.

In all, even if you feel like crap during the second trimester, the crappiness will be nothing compared to the other trimesters. There is just something special about the second trimester.
