Diagnosis and Treatment

The only way for the condition to be effectively diagnosed is through laparoscopy. The benefit for this method is that extra endometrial tissue can be removed during the procedure. Ultrasounds cannot test for endometriosis, but pelvic examinations can. However, with the pelvic examination, the definite diagnosis is confirmed by surgery. In cases where endometrial tissue keeps regenerating after surgery, a hysterectomy is usually recommended.

Endometriosis symptoms can be managed by medication for pain relief, while hormone therapy can be used to slow the growth of endometrial tissue. However, some of these hormones do have side effects.
