Confessions of Fat Girl 138: The Storm

June 28th, 2010

Just as I thought, the calm soon gave way to the storm.

After an uneventful weekend, my day got off to a good start. Being the last week of school for the children, it was rather chaotic as the kids reminded me of all their activities for the week. After dropping them in school, Legachi had gone to Victoria Island to try her luck with dropping her CV around, and I had gone to the gym to make up for the days I lost last week. I decided not to weigh myself this morning, as I wasn’t sure if I would have lost anything considerable, especially as I was in bed for a few days last week. But did I make up for it in the gym or what?! I pounded that rubber for the better part of 90 minutes, running, squatting, lifting and bending like my life depended on it.

But that isn’t the storm I mean. Not even close.

After dropping the kids at one of their after-school activities, I got a text from Chidera…and it sent me into a tailspin.

Somto is in town. He just sent me a message, asking him to meet him at The Blowfish after work. I don’t want to go. What do you think?

Knowing this wasn’t a text message matter, I had immediately called her.

“You have to go!” I’d said, the very instant she had answered her phone. “I’m glad that he’s asked to meet in a neutral place. If you don’t go, he might decide to come to look for you here or, worse still, at work!”

Chidera had sighed. “Ihunna, I’m just not ready for that confrontation…”

“Babes, the sooner we face the wahala, the better. Let’s hear what he has to say.”

Another sigh from her. “Okay…I guess. I’ll leave here at about 5pm…”

“Chidera, don’t move a muscle until I get to your office. Under no circumstance must you go there alone! Make no excuse…this is an ambush! I’m sure Somto will have his own reinforcement, in the form of his sisters. You need me there!!!”

Luckily, she had seen my point and waited for me to pick her up from the office. The drive from her office to The Blowfish was extended by the rush-hour traffic, but even with the traffic, Chidera and I had barely said a word to each other. We obviously had a lot on our minds.

As we walked into The Blowfish, I saw that my suspiscion had been correct. Sitting on a table was Somto, in the company of two of his sisters, Ifeoma and Nwanne. I held Chidera’s hand for support, as we walked towards them.

When Somto saw us, he had started laughing, shaking his head.

“I don’t believe this!” he said, as we approached their table. “I’ve been hoping everyone has been pretty much joking and having a laugh!”

Nwanne had scoffed. “Well, clearly not, as you can see!”

“Chidera!” Somto had part exclaimed, part laughed. “You’re really pregnant though!”

Without answering, we’d helped ourselves to our seats, and Chidera had looked her former husband straight in the eye.

“You wanted to see me,” she had declared, matter-of-fact.

“How far gone are you? I ask, because you look pretty advanced, considering I only left in February!” Somto had said cheekily. “And there you were crying and begging me to stay, when you were already sleeping around yourself!”

“First of all, I am only 15 weeks pregnant. I’m sure you can tell that’s quite a while a shorter time than the over 22 weeks since you’ve been away!” Chidera had snapped, ignoring my persistent kicks under the table.

“My God, Chidera! Have you no shame?!” Ifeoma retorted. “So not even up to 2 months after your husband left, you were already bringing men into the house?!”

“There weren’t ‘men’, it was just one man! And considering your brother didn’t touch me in over two years, I think I even waited long!” Chidera had answered with as much defiance.

“And where were my children in all this? Where were they when you brought a strange man to my home? Did he ever spend the night there? Did they ever see him?!” Somto demanded, all hints of jokes and sarcasm gone.

Chidera shook her head. “You know I would never expose them to that!”

“Oh no, I don’t know anything, Chidera! I thought I knew you, but it turns out I don’t!” Somto exclaimed. “I mean, look at you! Pregnant?!!”

“Somto, we have already signed divorce papers. You left our marriage. Did you expect me to just sit there like a log of wood? I’m only human!” Chidera answered, clearly exasperated.

Somto nodded slowly. “Fair enough. You’re right. It’s not my business what you do with yourself. It’s not my business that you have chosen to be pregnant with an illegitimate child, when your divorce isn’t finalized, and you have 3 small kids to worry about!” he had said, “But you know what’s my business? Our house! You sold our house?!”

“It’s not our house! It’s my house!!! You left it to me, remember. You said I could keep it, or have you forgotten?!” Chidera snapped.

“I left that house for the children. Now that you’ve sold it, I believe it’s important for you to remit the proceeds to me!”

At this point, I looked at Somto in disbelief. I couldn’t get over the fact that, despite all the katakata, all he was thinking of was money.

Chidera laughed humourlessly. “You are really funny, Somto. You gave me that house. You have no business with the proceeds of my sale. I am keeping that money in trust for when I’m ready to buy another house of our own. You think I’m going to allow you burn through my children’s money, just like that?! If yes, you have another thing coming!”

And that was how they argued back and forth for the next half hour, and I was stupidied that the bone of contention was the money from the proceeds of the sale of their house, and not even Chidera’s growing pregnancy, or even custody arrangements for the kids. All Somto, Ifeoma and Nwanne were interested in, was the money…money!!! Chidera was determined not to use it on anything but a replacement home for her and her kids when they were ready.

Not soon enough, the uncomfortable meeting was over, with Chidera making a verbal commitment to buy a suitable home very soon. As we walked away, Ifeoma had chased after us.

“Chidera, you really disappointed me! I can’t believe you actually went ahead to get yourself pregnant…and for an ABO* for that matter!” she had exclaimed.

“You know???” Chidera had exclaimed, her voice but a hoarse whisper.

You better brace yourself. From what Amanda told me, there are already whispers in your Head Office about your affair with that young man. Only God knows what the repercussions of your actions will be!!! Why didn’t you just close your legs, ehn?! And there I was, fighting for you!” Ifeoma had said angrily, before walking away.

As Chidera and I exchanged a panicked glance, I knew that the storm was finally here!
