Confessions of a Fat Girl 97: Caught in the middle!

Getting back to Akwaugo’s apartment, I was filled with tension and apprehension. Happy as I was about Akwaugo and Chiemela’s love, I knew that striking the right balance between supporting them, and appeasing Ogonna, wouldn’t be easy.

And I was right! No sooner had we walked into the apartment, did the grand confrontation happen.

“So, wait! Let me get this straight!” Ogonna said, walking out of her room, poised as if she had been waiting for our arrival. “You and Chiemela? My ex, Chiemela?!”

“Ogonna, please let’s not be loose with words. Chiemela is hardly your ex. You barely even dated the guy!” Akwaugo muttered, walking past Ogonna, to the kitchen.

“Are you high on something? What the hell are you saying?!” Ogonna exclaimed. “Chiemela and I were dating before we all left for Enugu, and you know that!”

“If you call talking on the phone, and maybe one or two lunch dates dating! Ogonna, you told me yourself that you never even kissed the guy!” Akwaugo answered.

“Oh, and I’m guessing you have! Abi?!”

Akwaugo shook her head and smiled. “Honey, we have done a whole lot more than that!”

“Akwaugo!” I exclaimed, wishing my sister would just shut up, and stop making matters worse!

“Don’t ‘Akwaugo’ me!” she shouted. “Why are you making me out to be the bad guy here?! Ogonna said she didn’t want the man again! So why are we getting all hot and bothered because someone else has decided to take him instead?!”

“That ‘someone else’ shouldn’t be my sister!!!” Ogonna shouted back. “Can’t you get it through your thick skull that’s what the issue is here?! You of all people should have known better than that!!!”

“Please educate me, because I don’t understand why it is such a big deal!” Akwaugo yelled back.

“You know how much I loved him! Why do you think it was so hard to make a decision between him and Ifeanyi?! It’s because I was head over heels in love with him…and you knew that!!!” Ogonna screamed.

Pin drop silence followed, with none of us knowing what to say. Yes, I’d known Ogonna had felt strongly for Chiemela, but I hadn’t thought it was this strong!

“But you did make a decision.” Akwaugo finally said “You chose Ifeanyi.”

“So what are you saying? If I’d chosen Chiemela, you would have gone after Ifeanyi instead?!” Ogonna retorted.

Akwaugo gave her a dirty look. “Don’t be silly, Ogonna!”

“What exactly is this thing with Chiemela even?!” Ogonna demanded. “Is it a fling? Are you guys just warming each other’s beds?!!”

“We’re in love with each other, Ogonna.” Akwaugo answered.

Ogonna shook her head and laughed, but that laughter was loaded with anything but humour. “In love!” she repeated drily. “That’s interesting…my sister and my ex! How romantic!” she looked at Akwaugo, her expression set. “You’re going to have to make a choice. I forbid you to see him anymore. I’m not going to stand for it. So, either you break up with him, and continue like this never happened, or you can stay here in New York, and forget about attending my wedding!”

My mouth opened, and shut, and then opened again. Was Ogonna being for real?! What kind of evil ultimatum was that.

“You’re a piece of work, Ogonna!” Akwaugo said, her tone also expressing her own disbelief. “Not only did you reject the guy, you are getting married to another man in less than three weeks. Three weeks, Ogonna! Obsessing over whom your so-called ex is, or isn’t, seeing, should be the very last thing on your mind!”

“Yes or no, Akwaugo?!” Ogonna snapped. “Are you going to make a decision or not??!”

“My dear sister, I love you from the bottom of my heart, but it’s going to have to be a ‘no’!” Akwaugo responded. “I have finally met the man who makes my heart smile. I’m sorry, but I absolutely can’t…and will not…let him go. Not for you…not for anyone!”

“Not even your kids?” Ogonna retorted. “Have you even told them? Do they know their Mom has been sleeping with a man who was in love with their Aunt, just a few short months ago??!”

For the first time, I saw Akwaugo look a bit unsettled.

“Not right now. But they will…soon…I’ll tell them…when I’m ready…” Akwaugo answered.

Ogonna laughed another humourless laughter. “Your mouth is no longer sharp, abi? Now, you are stuttering!” she eyed her, and hissed. “You are a pathetic excuse of a woman, so desperate for a man that she is content with her sister’s leftovers!”

And with that, she’d stormed off to the guestroom we shared.

“What are you doing?!” I demanded, when I saw her throwing her clothes into her luggae.

“What does it look like I’m doing?! I’m going back to my house,” she muttered. “I don’t have to stay here to watch any of this. I don’t need to watch them rub this so-called romance in my face!”

“Ogonna, you can’t go back to Jersey!” I shrieked. “What about the bridal shower? You know Akwaugo has already organized something nice for tomorrow!”

“I’m not interested in that, or any other thing else your sister has to say, or offer! She can take her bridal shower and stuff it!” she replied, furiously throwing her things into her bag.

“But aren’t you even over reacting?!” I couldn’t help but exclaim. “You chose Ifeanyi, for crying out loud! Why are so angry that Akwaugo is now with Chiemela?!”

She looked up to glare at me. “I see you are on her side…abi? No problem! All my life, I have been there for you both, even when it was not convenient for me, but the first chance you both get, you stab me in the back!”

I rolled my eyes. This melodrama did not become her at all!

“Well, you can stay here with her, since you have clearly taken sides!” she continued ranting, as she grabbed her bag.

“Ogonna!” I exclaimed.

“Please, don’t bother coming to Enugu! I don’t want to see you or Akwaugo there! You can stay here with her, until it’s time for her to marry Chiemela!” she retorted, as she stormed out of the room.

“Ogonna, wait!” I called out, as I ran after her.

“Let her go!” Akwaugo muttered, as the front door slammed shut.

I looked from one sister, to the dust trail of the other, and shut my eyes tight. How had I ended up caught in the middle of all this?!

  1. I don’t know why some humans choose to be so difficult to deal with! You didn’t so much as end ur relationship with this man officially b4 u chose another; he has found love in your sis and u are angry; what do u want? u dont want him and u dont want ur sis to have him thats very self-centered of you; you didnt so much as kiss him so in my opinion there’s no basis for undue comparism. If I were to be Akwaugo I will bring Ifeanyi and Chiemela into the matter lets see if Ogonna will have the guts to react to Ifeanyi’s face or Chiemela’s the one she left for good.
