Confessions of a Fat Girl 96: The Love Story

“Why are you boiling?!”, I’d asked Ogonna, quite taken aback by the visible anger on Ogonna’s face.

“That was Chiemela on the phone!” she said through her teeth, almost as if I hadn’t been there when the call had come in.

“We don’t know that for sure…” I offered weakly, trying to play devil’s advocate, when I was almost a hundred percent sure it was him.

“Please don’t play me for a fool, Ihunna! We both know that was him on the line. I would know that voice in my sleep!” she snapped, before muttering, “Besides, he used to call me ‘Sweetness’, and I don’t think a lot of people use that term!”

At that point, Akwaugo walked back to the table, sat down, and continued with her meal, as if nothing had happened.

“Who was that one the phone?! Was that Chiemela?!” Ogonna demanded.

Akwaugo looked her square in the eye. “You know very well it was.”

“So…so why is he calling you ‘Sweetness’?! Since when did that one happen? Or is he your mystery guy? Your ‘Zach’?!” Ogonna flared.

Akwaugo set her fork down. “As a matter of fact, he is! Is there a problem? Do you have a problem with that? Because I would be surprised if you did…considering your wedding gown is already in a bag, a few blocks away, as we speak!”

Ogonna and Akwaugo locked eyes for what seemed like an eternity, before Ogonna grabbed her bag and stormed out of the café.

When she’d left, I turned to squeal at Akwaugo. “Girl!!! You can kill somebodi oh!!! Chiemela?!”

“Please, if you’re about to judge me, save it…because I don’t need to hear it…” Akwaugo stated defensively.

“Babe, why on earth would I judge you?! You are single…and so is Chiemela. Not to mention the fact that he is a goooood man! Girl, I’m happy for you!!!” I said, from the bottom of my heart.

She smiled and squeezed my hand. “Thanks hun!”

And then she told me how it had all began…their love story!

In February, as they sat in the departure lounge, waiting to board their plane back to New York, they had talked, first about trivial things like the poor state of air-conditioning in the airport, and the unruly children running all over the place. Then they had gotten to talking about what had happened in Enugu. Akwaugo had consoled him over losing Ogonna to Ifeanyi, and he had commended her for being able to reconcile with our Dad. By the time they boarded the plane, she had told him how Kel had asked if they could get back together, and how she had some hard decisions to make upon her return to New York. She told him how she was fed up of living the life of a kept woman, and how she wished she had done a better job with her career. He, in turn, confessed how he was growing increasingly disenchanted with Wall Street, and actually craved a life in the academia, possibly even taking up a teaching job with one of the major business schools. He had proceeded to give her advice about getting her career back on track…by getting serious with her Paralegal work, learning as much as she could from her senior colleagues, and even writing the Bar exam. Soon, they were gisting and reminiscing about life on the Nnsuka campus, and all the crazy characters that lived in their neighborhood. For the entire 6 hour flight to London, the 4 hour layover, and the 9 hour flight to New York, they had talked nonstop…about everything, and anything. By the time they got to New York, Akwaugo knew she had started feeling something strong for him. As they shared a taxi home, she half hoped he’d ask for her number…but he hadn’t. She hadn’t asked for his either, and they had bid each other farewell, when she got to her street.

For the next few days, he was all she could think of. He was her waking and sleeping thought. She heard his voice in everything, and lived…and relived, those wonderful hours spent with him, over and over again.

One day, she had decided to take his advice and start going to work earlier, so she’d set off almost 2 hours before she normally would have, and stopped at a nearby Starbucks, to grab a coffee…and there he was, sitting there, drinking a cup of coffee, and reading a newspaper. When he caught sight of her, the way his face lit up made her realise that she hadn’t been far from his own thoughts either. She had joined him at his table, he had complimented her about how she’d looked, and commended her for making the effort with her job. For the next hour, they’d sat there talking, and bonding, each of them almost running late for their respective jobs. This time, they had exchanged numbers.

That night, he had called her. She’d asked him if he wanted to grab a meal. He had offered to pick her up. And they had found themselves in a Cuban restaurant downtown. Looking at each other across the table, there was no mistaking the chemistry they had. After their meal, instead of taking a taxi, they’d decided to walk, talking all the way home. When they got to her apartment building, they’d looked at each other for what seemed like hours, before he’d leaned in and kissed her. She said that was the most magical moment of her life, and everything in her had melted at that kiss…her heart, her mind, her soul…her everything.

“I love him more than I have ever loved anyone, Ihunna. Even Kel and I didn’t have anything like this! Kel and I were hardly even friends. Chiemela is my best friend, my confidant, my ally, my support system, my rock….he is my everything, Ihunna!”

I felt so emotional listening to her gush about him. There was no mistaking the fact that this was really true love…at its very purest.

But as happy as I was for her, as poignant as their love story was, I couldn’t help but ponder over what a complicated situation it is.

It wont be an easy ride at all!!!

  1. Like Chingy said, life is too short and Akwaugo and Chiemela deserve to be happy. Yes, it’s not the best or easiest of situations but they need to at least give it a shot.
