Confessions of a Fat Girl 95: Perfect Fit; Perfect Surprise!

15th April, 2010

Final fitting day finally arrived! And we began the day with much excitement!

Of course, she was extremely nervous, from the very moment she opened her eyes. As we had our breakfast, she worried that she might have gained some weight since her last appointment, and that the dress would no longer fit. By the time we were in the cab on the way there, she started worrying that she might have actually lost weight, and that the dress would be too big. Then she started worrying about not liking the dress anymore when she saw it, and worried if she’d made a mistake picking that particular design. Akwaugo and I had attempted to assure her all would be well, but when she kept finding something new to worry about, we just kept quiet and let her rant.

But all her worries proved totally unfounded, because the minute she stepped out in that dress, I burst into tears. She was a vision of loveliness. That dress was made for nobody but her!

“Are those good tears…or bad tears?” Ogonna asked, a tentative look on her face.

“You look breath taking!” the Kleinfeld Consultant gushed, and I knew it wasn’t fake or forced enthusiasm. The woman had already locked down the sale, as well as her commission, and had no reason to fake the funk.

“Beautiful!” Akwaugo said, her voice heavy with emotion.

Ogonna smiled and nodded as she looked at her reflection in the mirror, “We picked the right one!” she said.

“You might want to see how it looks with this…” the Consultant said, fixing the veil on her head.

With the complete look, Akwaugo and I didn’t even know when we held each other, both of us wiping tears from our eyes. Our big sister looked absolutely beautiful.

“Ifeanyi is going to be blown away!” Akwaugo exclaimed.

Ogonna smiled, and we knew there were no more words necessary. We’d hit a home run with this dress.

So, we’d left Kleinfeld, with the agreement to pick the dress up tomorrow, after some beading work has been completed on the veil. We’d decided to go to a nearby Starbucks, to have some coffee.

“So, in a few weeks, you will be a married woman!” Akwaugo remarked, “Na to born pikin sharp sharp oh!”

“My dear, you can count me out of that biko! At my age?!” Ogonna exclaimed. “I’m not about to start giving myself high blood pressure by trying in vain for a baby! Thank God Ifeanyi already has the boys. They will be my children, and I will be their mother. Let me spend my time and energy loving my man, instead of checking ovulation calendar! I see so many women at the clinic going through this…I’m not about to do that to myself.”

“So, you won’t even try?” I asked, a bit surprised.

“Ifeanyi and I have agreed not to stress it. If it happens, it will be a pleasant surprise, but we are already preparing for the worst case scenario.”

I shrugged. I can’t say I blame her. At the age of 44, it won’t be the easiest thing in the world.

“My dear, whatever rocks your boat!” Akwaugo said, rising to her feet. “I need to use the restroom. I’ll be right back!”

When she walked away, I turned to Ogonna. “So, you mean you haven’t met this Zach guy in all these weeks you’ve been here?”

“For where!” Ogonna remarked. “It’s either she is ashamed of him…or ashamed of us her family!”

“But there is a guy sha?” I asked, because I had started to suspect Akwaugo might have made him up.

“There is definitely a guy. She’s always whispering and giggling on the phone, and at odd hours. There’s definitely someone!” Ogonna replied in the affirmative.

And then, Akwaugo’s phone started ringing. On the screen, we saw it was from someone she’d named Boo. Ogonna and I exchanged an excited glance. Nooooo! This was too good to be true.

“Should I answer it?” Ogonna squealed, reaching for the phone.

I immediately swatted her hand away. “My friend, don’t do that!” I giggled. Even though I was also curious about this mystery guy, I knew we had to respect our sister’s privacy.

So, we’d let the phone ring off. As we were giggling about it, the phone started ringing again. Again, it was from Boo.

Without bothering to ask this time, Ogonna swiped the Receive button, and put the phone on speaker, and we both waited for Boo to speak, trying hard not to giggle.

“Sweetness?” came the deep, baritone voice.

A deep baritone voice that, not only did not sound Caucasian, was distinctly Nigerian, and very familiar indeed.

And suddenly, the realization dawned on me, just about the same time it hit Ogonna.

“Chiemela!!!!” we both exclaimed, in unison.

At that point, Akwaugo returned to the table, picked up her phone, gave us both a dirty look, and walked away.

As I watched her walk away, my shock and surprise gave room to pleasant delight! Eeeeeeehn??! Akwaugo was seeing Chiemela?! Now it all made perfect sense to me! All the cloak and dagger behaviour! But as surprising as it all was, I couldn’t help but be pleased about the whole thing. I couldn’t wish for a better man for my sister.

Turning to Ogonna, the smile and excitement faded the minute I saw the look on her face. She was as red as the dress she wore, her nostrils were flared, and her breathing was measured. In all my 37, almost 38 years of age, I had never seen her like that before…

She was hopping mad!
