Confessions of a Fat Girl 85: Food Cravings

I’ve always been a water drinker. Ever since I read in a magazine, when I was younger, that drinking lots of water would give me glowing, model-like skin, I’ve taken water pretty seriously. I drink at least six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, and I also count my herbal tea toward that total. I don’t count juice or anything carbonate/caffeinated toward my fluid consumption.

Over the years, I have realised that staying hydrated is essential to good health. Eating a high fibre diet without enough water can still lead to constipation. Water is essential for the absorption of vitamins and minerals that we take in through the eating of healthy foods. Water can cut down on headaches and back pain which can be a sign of dehydration. Sometimes hunger is thirst in disguise, so taking in a cup of herbal tea, or a nice glass of cool water, can help keep us from eating when we really aren’t hungry, and water is needed for the metabolism of fat. Drinking plenty of water after exercising can help cut down on lactic acid buildup, which leads to muscle soreness. And yes, drinking enough water keeps the skin moist and healthy.

I’ve heard the argument that drinking too much water will make you spend all day in the bathroom. This can be true, to a certain extent. If you’re not getting enough fluids, and start adding more water into your daily routine, you will notice that you’ll be hitting the toilet more often. But once you reach and maintain your water-intake goals, your body will adjust, and it will no longer be an issue.

Okay, that’s enough of me and my water rant. Sometimes, I write these things as a reminder to myself.

On another note, something interesting happened this evening. JJ told me he felt like buying pizza for the family, and if I’d mind. I answered “No!” immediately, and then thought about it a bit. Was I being polite, or did I really not want it? I thought about the sweet and savory deliciousness of a cheesy, meaty pizza, but then thought about the grease and chemicals, and how ill I would feel after I ate it, and I realized no really meant no. But for a while after that discussion, I was still thinking about pizza! This made me think about food cravings, and wondering to what extent they are psychological or physiological.

I’m not a doctor, neither do I play one on TV, but I’m thinking that, for the most part, the body craves healthy food but the mind craves what is unhealthy. JJ still went ahead to buy his pizza, and as he and the kids indulged in it, I thought it would be hard for me to watch them, without indulging in any, but surprisingly, I was able to stay strong.

So, I decided to make myself my own tasty treat, which would give me the satisfaction of pizza, but with far less damage. Flipping through Google, I found an easy and quick recipe for a Turkey & Sweet Corn wrap. Luckily, I had all the ingredients I’d need, and proceeded to get cracking on it.

I cut some cooked turkey I had in the fridge into strips, and spiced it a little more with some soy sauce and dry pepper. I then shallow fried it in 1 tablespoon of olive oil. In a separate bowl, I mixed some sweetcorn with chilli, lime zest and juice, to make a salsa. Then I heated a sheet of brown, flat bread on my grill, before filling it with the turkey strips and sweet corn salsa, adding a teaspoon of light mayonnaise to make it interesting.

All in, it took me about 30 minutes to make, by which time, my brood had demolished the giant box of pizza, and were eyeing my own tasty treat. But as I only made 1 wrap, I just chinned them, and ate my meal solo! Serves them right for attempting to derail me! 240 calories of decadence!

Later that evening, Legachi uploaded pictures of reception venue options in the BBM group we’ve created for Ogonna’s wedding planning. Almost unanimously, we concluded on the banquet hall of the Golden Royale Hotel, which we thought would turn out best with Ogonna’s desired purple, lilac, and champagne colour themed décor.

Things are unfolding rather nicely!
