Confessions of a Fat Girl 84: Look like an Mgbeke!

18th March, 2010

It is truly a small, small world!

I decided to join the Power Walking group again, this morning, and was so happy to see my new friend, Loretta. It was way more fun doing all the crazy walks, jumps, and skips, with a partner this time. And I hadn’t realized what a wild sense of humour she has. I was in stitches for the entire 50-minute duration.

We had such a great time together that, later that morning, she actually stopped by my house for a visit. As someone who has very few friends, it felt great having another female in the house. And we gisted like old friends. You would never have believed we’d only met a few short days ago.

Somehow, I got to telling her about my sister Ogonna, and her whirlwind romance with her secondary schoolmate, when Loretta’s eyes almost popped from their sockets. Apparently, like Ifeanyi, she had also attended the University of Port Harcourt, and had been very close friends with his late wife, Ukachi.

“So your sister is the woman that has blown Juice’s mind!” she exclaimed.

“Juice’s?” I repeated, confused.

“Juice was our nickname for Ifeanyi!” she laughed. “You know…brain juice! That boy was intelligent! Do you know he had a perfect 5 point GPA for all but his 1st semester in school?”

I laughed. “I think I heard something like that.”

“Now, my mind is at rest! If she is your sister, then I’m sure she’s a good person!” Loretta exclaimed. “I heard how Ifeanyi is head over heels in love with one woman, and even about to marry her! And, I have to admit, I was worried about the woman being a gold digger!”

Gold digger?! Not a chance! I didn’t waste any time to tell her that Ogonna has a successful medical practice in the U.S., which seemed to further impress her.

“I’m very very happy to hear this!” Loretta said happily. “My dear, your sister is in the best of hands! Ifeanyi is a good man!”

I couldn’t resist asking her what was still on my mind.

“But…but don’t you think he’s a little arrogant…and full of himself?”

Loretta smiled, “Nne, if you knew where he was coming from, you would understand his behavior. And it’s all a façade, really. Just an act he puts up to convince himself that he is no longer that village boy that everyone used to make fun of. But when you get to know him, you’ll see he has a heart of pure gold!”

Okay oh! Now that the 1,000th person has said the same thing, I might as well relax, and accept him as my new brother-in-law!

On the fitness side, I killed it at the gym this morning. I rode that thing for 90 minutes, covering 6km, while doing running sprints and uphill sprints, it was both dreadful and awesome. I started cheering, and jumping up and down when I finished, and the other sweaty people made faces at me. Na them sabi! Lol!!

To crown it all, I made the salad of life today; a shrimp and lemon salad. It was a-m-a-z-i-n-g!!! I made it with peeled (medium) shrimp, the zest of two lemons, 2 garlic cloves, crushed, finely chopped onions, a generous handful of chopped fresh parsley, 1-2 tablespoons of dark soy sauce (to taste), 1 teaspoon Cameroun pepper, a tablespoon of dry mustard, a half cup of light mayonnaise. Served on a bed of fresh, crisp lettuce, garnished with lemon wedges for squeezing, and chilled for at least an hour…pure heaven! And it was surprisingly filling too!

Before going to bed, I had a marathon phone session with Legachi, and Ogonna’s secondary school besties, Amaka and Sochi, on preps for the wedding. As far as wedding planning goes, May 1st is really just around the corner. And with Ogonna not back in the country till a couple of weeks before, the onus is on us to get things going in her stead.

With the traditional wedding scheduled to hold in our Father’s house, we will only need to worry about decorating and feeding logistics. Our Dad is taking care of arrangements for the Church ceremony, but as for the wedding reception, we are still torn about which venue options are most suitable. Amaka and Sochi have promised to send a list of the options, as well as their price information, and possibly pictures, and Legachi will be on the hunt for the other vendors. My offer to source a few of the vendors from Lagos was shut down, as everyone thought it would be too expensive. Okay oh! As long as their make up artist doesn’t make my sister look like an mgbeke!

I’m actually getting excited!
