Confessions of a Fat Girl 83: Emotional versus Physical Hunger

Finally, we were able to get Akwaugo to admit that she’s seeing someone. The three of us were Skyping (well, four, if you’ll count Ifeanyi, who kept waving at us from Ogonna’s screen), and after harassing Akwaugo, she admitted that she has been dating one of her colleagues for a few weeks.

“Ehen! I knew it!” Ogonna exclaimed. “No wonder you have been so serious about work all of a sudden!”

Apparently, Ogonna was also right about another thing. The guy, whose name is Zach, is Caucasian.

“How long has this been going on?” I asked, very happy for my sister.

“Shortly after I got back from Nigeria,” you could actually hear the joy in Akwaugo’s voice. “He is my best friend, soul mate, everything wrapped in one!”

“Wow! All that in just about a month?” I remarked.

“What can I say? We fell in love hard and fast!” Akwaugo added coyly.

“Love sha!” Ogonna giggled. “Na wa oh! And to think both of us were lonely, single women, only a few short months ago!”

“It’s amazing what difference a little time makes.” Akwaugo giggled too.

“Have the kids met him? Does Kel know you’re seeing someone?” I asked.

The laughter immediately faded. “You can be such a kill joy, Ihunna! What has Kel got to do with this, biko?! We’re divorced! I’ve moved on! You people should give me a break, abeg!”

“Okay, maybe not Kel…but what about the kids?” Ogonna asked.

“Please, you ladies should chill! I have only been seeing him for a few weeks. It’s not time for him to meet them yet!”

She actually had a point there.

In other news, I have been reading this book called The Flat Belly Diet, and I came across something that really struck me. It was about the differences between physical hunger and emotional hunger. And it totally blew my mind!

The following are some of the things that were highlighted:

  1. Emotional hunger comes on suddenly; physical hunger occurs gradually.
  1. When you are eating to fill a void that isn’t related to an empty stomach, you crave a specific food, such as pizza or ice cream, and only that food will meet your need. When you eat because you are actually hungry, you’re open to options.
  1. Emotional hunger feels like it needs to be satisfied instantly with the food you crave; physical hunger can wait.
  1. Even when you are full, if you’re eating to satisfy an emotional need, you’re more likely to keep eating. When you’re eating because you’re hungry, you’re more likely to stop when you’re full.
  2. Emotional eating can leave behind feelings of guilt; eating when you are physically hungry does not.

Wow! It was like an eureka moment for me, and explained so much about why I have failed and fallen so badly in the past. I have always known that I am an emotional eater, but seeing the differences between emotional and physical hunger, in black and white, was a real eye opener for me.

On the activity side, I am so sore today. I did the full circuit of weight training machines today, the same as I did yesterday, and I’m feeling muscles that have been hibernating under fat for many years, and they are angry at being woken up. I’m also feeling so drained!!!

Breaking it down, I’ve been to the gym 5 of the last 7 days (excluding the weekend), and I did at least 30 minutes of cardio (treadmill/elliptical) on all 5 days, as well as strength training on 3 days.

So it’s back to the gym tomorrow. I’m actually looking forward to next week’s weigh-in, to see if I would have recorded a more significant weight loss number.

While trying to eat healthfully and exercise to get healthy and lose weight, I have had to cut out things that I have a hard time moderating like fresh, white bread slathered with butter, sweet baked goods, most restaurant food, all fast food, fried foods, pizza, various chocolates, and alcohol. But to balance that out, I have made it a priority to plan certain indulgences, so I don’t ever feel deprived. I know that if I am too restrictive, or deprive myself, that is a one way ticket to Binge City.

My “planned indulgences” are something that I really look forward to, and I have chosen holidays/special occasions or long weekends for this. Basically, I allow myself to have whatever I like, just not all of them at the same time (this has been a tough lesson for me), and I eat accordingly (light overall, but heavier on veggies, lean protein and water) before and after, so there won’t be any “I blew my diet so I may as well just eat the house” mentality going on.

That said, I hope I have lost enough weight to have enough of a “planned indulgence” by the time Easter comes in a few weeks, or when I head to New York later in April. Because I intend to make my sister’s new boyfriend give me a real treat!
