Confessions of a Fat Girl 82: My New Friend

I finally succumbed to my trainer’s request to join his ‘Power Walking’ group. He has been on my case for weeks, about this his so-called group, which he has been touting as the perfect warm up to a workout day. Hmmmm! Apart from not being up to subjecting myself to that kind of early morning punishment, I have struggled to understand what power walking will benefit me!

Anyways, yesterday, he’d been able to convince me to give it a try, so at 5.50am this morning, I got into my work-out gear, hopped into my car, and drove to the meeting point. Getting there by 6am, I was shocked to see the number of women, and even some men, who were there. We were about 30 people, in weights varying from annoyingly thin to OMG-fat! My trainer gave me the thumbs up sign when he saw me, and before long, we were already power walking down Admiralty Way.

But silly me for thinking we would simply be strolling. For where! My trainer is honestly on crack! We would walk a few feet, jog a few feet, do some Jumping Jacks, run a few feet…it was craziness! And worse was the fact that it was getting brighter than I thought it would at that time of day, and people headed to work were having a field day, looking at us as they drove by. Sheeeesh! I have actually become one of those women I also used to laugh at!

But as rigorous and embarrassing as it was, by the time we got back to our meeting point, I actually felt very energized, and roaring to go. Checking my watch, I saw that it was just 6.55am…meaning I still had enough time to get home in time to take my kids to school at 7.30am.

As I started my car, I noticed a lady who hadn’t come with one, and who was preparing to walk back on to the road. She was one of the non-fat people in the group, with a body that was just ridiculously lovely!!! Her stomach was as flat as a washboard, and her arms and thighs were gorgeously toned. Even with all the sweat, I could tell she was a beautiful woman.

So, I offered her a ride, and she accepted. I found out her name is Loretta.

As we chatted, we realized the reason we hadn’t met at the gym before is because she is one of the evening people, while I only do mornings.

“But why do you bother yourself? If I had a body like yours, the gym would never see my break light!” I remarked.

She smiled. “My dear, it’s coming to the gym on a daily basis that has got me where I am!”

I rolled my eyes. “Let me guess. You were my size before, abi?”

“My dear, I was probably twice your size!” she laughed, pulling out her phone, and showing me an old picture.

I almost crashed my car, as I stared at the overweight woman in the picture.

“And that was 3 years ago!” she remarked.

“2006??!!” I exclaimed, in shock.

“2007 actually. January 2007. A few weeks before my 40th birthday! I was about 150kg!”

I looked at her shock! I don’t know which surprised me more; the fact that she used to be fat, or the fact that she is over 40! I could have sworn I was at least 5 years older than her.

“How did you do it?” I asked.

“Lots of work. Lots of discipline. And lots of commitment,” she answered. “Don’t get me wrong…it wasn’t all smooth sailing. There were times I fell, and gained more than I’d lost, but I kept at it. For every fall, I would rise up twice as committed.”

“I’ve been struggling to lose weight since I got serious about it last year. I started at about 113kg…got down to under 90kg, but gained all the weight back. I’m just trying to lose the weight I regained.” I told her, still shocked that this woman, who didn’t look a kilo heavier than 60, had ever been obese.

“My dear, just stay on it. Keep doing what you’re doing. Be more disciplined with yourself, if you have to. And you’ll see the weight fall off,” she reassured.

I stared at her again. “I’m sure your husband can’t get enough of you now!”

The smile on her face faded a little. “The irony is that, as soon as I started losing weight, my marriage started falling apart. My husband didn’t like the fact that I was taking time to go to the gym, or to go running, or that I wasn’t eating pounded yam with him anymore…I was cooking his food, don’t get me wrong…but he started resenting me and my ‘healthy food’ after a while.”

I shook my head, not being able to comprehend it. That was world’s away from what I have with my JJ, who has been so very supportive.

“About 18 months ago, with the last of our kids off to the UK for University, we realized that we didn’t have much of a relationship left to remain together….so we separated,” she continued. “We’re not divorced, but I do know he has another woman living in his house. And the bigger irony is that she is about the same size I used to be.”

That conversation stuck with me for the rest of the day. Wow! Different strokes for different folks, true true.

But I am very happy to have made a new friend. I know it’s early days, but she seems like someone I can really get along with. And this one that Chidera and I are still not talking, I could really do with another good friend!
