Confessions of a Fat Girl 81: Wedding Gowns

15th March, 2010

God bless the men (or women) who invented the Internet, Skype, and Instant Messaging! Thanks to them, I was able to participate in Ogonna’s bridal appointment, just as well as if I was in New York with them.

The day had gotten off to a shaky start, with Akwaugo meeting Ogonna just in the nick of time, right in front of Kleinfeld. She claimed she’d had to get to the office for an early meeting, but Ogonna and I had given her the side eye. Mmmm hmmm! After yesterday’s revelation of the possibility of her being in a hot romance, we were taking everything she said with a pinch of salt.

Ogonna had retreated into the inner rooms with her Bridal Consultant, and we got the first shocker of the day, when she emerged in this huge ball-gown of a dress. It had a tight bedazzled bodice, and enough tulle and organza in the skirt to make dresses for 5 small children!

“What do you think?” she beamed. “Isn’t this gorgeous?!”

I had the luxury of viewing the dress via our video chat, and also via the images Akwaugo was sending, and I didn’t have the heart to tell her my mind.

Luckily, Akwaugo was her blunt self.

“Yes…for someone half your age!” she exclaimed. “Babe…you are not 24 oh! You are almost 44! You can’t get away with looking like a Disney Princess!”

Disappointed, Ogonna and the Consultant had retreated to try on other dresses, and the next set of dresses were a snooze fest! It was as if the Consultant had interpreted, a bit too literally, our request to tone it down. She ended up toning it way, waaay down!

“Ma’am, she isn’t a bridesmaid. She’s the bride!” Akwaugo said to the Consultant, after the 3rd straight night-gown looking slip dress. “Please forget that I said she’s in her 40s. She is a sexy, mature woman, who has to be the center of all attention on her big day!”

“And what’s with all the white?!” I asked, having noticed that every single dress had been snow white.

“It has to be white oh!” Ogonna snapped. “I haven’t married before…I’m not a divorcee…I’m not a widow! I am a first-time bride, and I have to wear white!”

Akwaugo and I burst out laughing.

“You are a virgin too, abi?!” Akwaugo was in hysterics. “Oh Ogonna, don’t be daft!” then turning to the Consultant. “Did she make you get only white dresses?”

The woman looked frustrated. “She wouldn’t even look at any other shades. Not even ivory.”

“Please, so that we’re not here the whole day, let’s see her in other shades.” Akwaugo asked, still laughing. “Because obviously, these white gowns are just not werking!”

Reluctantly, Ogonna conceded, and when she re-emerged, in an ivory, strapless Vera Wang dress, we were all speechless.

“This is the one!” Akwaugo said, her eyes lit.

And I couldn’t have agreed more.

The dress was gorgeous! The dropped-waist detail accentuated all of Ogonna’s beautiful curves, the ivory lace was the perfect complement to her complexion, and she was able to still have her tulle, not in a caricature Princess style, but as a trendy, ruffled overlay.

As my sister spun around in the dress, I had to wipe tears from my eyes. And when the Consultant completed the look with a veil, even Akwaugo was crying.

“Babe…it’s happening!” she remarked. “You are a bride!”

Ogonna just smiled, and nodded, and her red eyes showed that she too was emotional. This had been a long time coming, but it had finally come.

“So, are you saying yes to the dress?” I chimed, mimicking our favorite bridal show.

“Hell yes!” Ogonna giggled.

The store was kind enough to reduce the time to fitting from the standard 12 weeks, to the 4 weeks that we had available. As Ogonna retreated with the staff, for payment and other ancillary details, Akwaugo called Ifeanyi on her phone, asking him to come replace her.

“Akwaugo! How can Ifeanyi come there?!” I exclaimed, when she was off the phone.

“Relax! She’s out of the gown, so he wont see anything!” she said rising to her feet. “I have a…a work lunch, and I’m already late for it. I’ll call her later,” then blowing me a kiss. “Okay babe, I have to disconnect this chat, as it’s my tablet we used to connect with you. Maybe Ogonna can patch you in with her own device?”

And before I could even say a word, the line had been disconnected.

Hmmm! Akwaugo! My eyes are on you!
