Confessions of a Fat Girl 80: Oyibo Boyfriend

Another day, another weigh in!

92.6 kg. Not the most impressive loss in the world (0.9kg), but I’ll take it. As long as the scale is going down, and not up, I’m good.

As for the weekend gone by, I’ll say it was just there. I ran into my former colleague, Ntianu, at the grocery store on Saturday, it almost killed the happy mood I entered the weekend with.

“Wow! Ihunna, so you kept the weight off!” was the first thing the retard said to me. “We actually had a bet after the last time we saw you last year, about how quickly you would put the weight back on!”

The smile froze on my face. “Oh really.” I said flatly. “And what side were you on?”

She giggled. “I won’t lie oh, Adaobi and I were sure that, highest, before Christmas you would be back to your orobo ways oh! It was Lilian that had some faith in you!”

I had to control the anger that was welling inside me. But as angry as I was, I was also relieved. I couldn’t imagine how she would have gloated if she had seen me in January, when I was carrying all those extra kilos around! Thank God I’d had the presence of mind to get back on my weight loss mission.

But I couldn’t resist hitting her lower below the belt.

“So, I heard they sacked all of you. Wow! That’s tough oh!” I remarked, very uncharacteristically of me. It was very unlike me to kick a person when he/she was already down, but I had been pushed to it.

This time, it was the smile on her own face that froze. “I…I resigned…”

“Ntianu, I have heard the gist, so no need to pretend with me!” I teased. “How are you coping?”

She sighed. “We thank God. It hasn’t been easy…but I’m in talks with another bank, so hopefully, something will happen soon. I don’t want to join you in diaper selling business!” and she had burst into laughter.

As she laughed, I had a thousand and one things I could say to retaliate, but chose not to stoop any lower than I already had. My businesses (plural) are doing well, and I am able to take care of my needs…which is more than I can say of her in her current state.

But the highpoint of my weekend was speaking with Ogonna yesterday, who was already in the U.S. with her fiancé.

“Everyone loves him, Ihu!” she gushed. “My partners at the Practice threw a reception for us last night, and he charmed everyone. They’re all so happy for me! And Ifeanyi LOVES it here in Fair Lawn! Like, he was blown away by the place. He says he’ll definitely be tagging along whenever I have to come here!”

“What about Akwaugo? Were you able to get her to agree to come with you for tomorrow’s appointment?” I asked.

“That your sister!” Ogonna hissed. “Ifeanyi and I had to drive to Manhattan after Church this morning…and you know how much I hate that drive! Guess what! She was walking into her building just as we got there, and the way she was dressed, it didn’t look like she slept there last night!”

I sat up.

“Ehn? She spent the night out? Was she with Kel?” I asked.

Ogonna laughed. “Which kin Kel! The kids spent the night with Kel!”

“So who was she with?” I asked.

“I think your sister has an oyibo boyfriend! That’s why she has been so dodgy these past few weeks!” Ogonna stated emphatically.

Wow! It all made perfect sense to me now. Of course she was seeing someone new. That perfectly explained why she hadn’t been interested in her ex-husband’s pleas for a reconciliation, and also why she had been incommunicado for so long.

“Did you ask her?” I asked.

“I did, but she clammed up immediately!” Ogonna laughed. “This was the way she behaved when she started dating Kel, way back then. So, I’ve decided to let her do her thing. When she is ready, she will tell us about him! What matters is that she has agreed to meet me at Kleinfeld tomorrow morning, so I don’t have to worry about that.”

“Please don’t buy any dress without showing me first!” I lamented, very emotional about missing my sister’s wedding gown appointment, which would have been a first for us, as a family. As Akwaugo had married Kel after such a whirlwind courtship, and as I had bought my own wedding gown here in Lagos, we’d never had the chance to shop together for the most important dress in a woman’s life.

“Babe, you know we will send pictures of each one, real time! Just be sure to charge your phone!” Ogonna giggled.

I smiled, and was consoled by the fact that I will at least get to be at the final fitting for whatever dress she chooses tomorrow.

I’m so excited for my sister!
