Confessions of a Fat Girl 79: Lumps, Bumps, and Jiggles!

11th March, 2010

I woke up to a picture of Ogonna, flanked by her soon-to-be stepsons, and it just warmed my heart. Two handsome replicas of their father who, from the happy smiles on their faces, look just as excited about my sister as their father is.

I couldn’t ask for more for her.

The picture was captioned ‘I have had the best few days with my boys, Somto and Tochi. I can’t wait for you meet them. Off to NYC tomorrow. Will call you when I get there.’

Awww, bless!

I read a great book today. It’s called The Portion Teller Plan. It is a fantastic read for anyone who would like to learn about sensible portion control, and not have to count calories, carbs or points. The author, Lisa Young, has provided a fantastic in-depth timeline about how the portions of food have exploded over the past 40 years, and how our stomachs and butts have expanded because of it.

I really like the “eyeball” method she details, because I don’t like to measure or count anything. I also like her approach that no foods should be off limits (except, of course, poison like High Fructose Corn Syrup) so that you never feel deprived. This is an important key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

Her phrases like “Diets don’t work” and “No one ever got fat from eating too many carrots” echo my own thoughts about eating sensibly, and weight loss. It was definitely a fantastic read.

Anyways, I finally had the courage to try on a smaller sized outfit today. Ever since I dropped to a size 18 in December, and skyrocked back to a size 24 about a month later. To be honest, that really did a number on my self confidence. It was like I got to the Promised Land, only to be thrown right back in the desert. So, I haven’t ventured near my smaller sized clothing…not even as I have been losing weight, week after week. I haven’t had the courage to face the heartbreak of failure.

But today, I decided to try, not even my size 22 jeans, but my size 20! Imagine my joy when I wore than and saw that I could actually pull them on and off without even undoing the zip. They were definitely loose, and it excited me no end. It means that I just might be ready for size 18 once again. I lost the nerve to try anything in that size today, but that will be a goal for next week!

On a side note, I still have the jeans that I wore the day I met my husband. Yep, 21 years ago! Some baggy, shapeless, stonewash jeans like that. That just shows you how sentimental I am. They are size 12, and I will throw a party the day I am able to get into them again. Well, we are getting there.

Seeing the weight drop on the scale is great, but I have to be honest, and admit that I do have lots of lumps and bumps and jiggles and stretch marks, and weighing in on a Monday morning stark naked doesn’t really do much for my ego, even though the numbers are going in the right direction. I guess that’s where my increased workouts will come in.

Thinking about Ogonna again, I made a mental note to make sure I call Akwaugo, so that she parks her sudden ‘busy’ schedule, and makes sure she makes time for Ogonna, especially on Monday. It will be a t-r-a-g-e-d-y if none of us is able to accompany Ogonna for her bridal appointment on Monday. If I could, I would be there in a flash, but I don’t think JJ will take kindly to me making a trip when I have only just succeeded in getting him to agree to my trip next month. These things are not cheap!

I’m going to end today’s post with a little nugget I found about sleep. I read today that getting enough sleep can help you lose weight!!! I couldn’t believe it at first, but I found a study online, where they asked a group of women to do nothing but get enough sleep (a minimum of 7.5 hours, going to bed and waking at a similar time every night) for a month. They were told not to do anything other than that, no changes in diet or exercise habits, just sleep, and the participants reported losses of up to 15 pounds. Whaaat! And I’m here, staying awake till after midnight! No more oh!

According to the article I read, it has to do with regulating hormones. Leptin signals our brain when our bellies are full, ghrelin, on the other hand tells us we’re hungry. Lack of sleep sends leptin down and ghrelin up, so we tend to eat more when we’re tired/sleepy.

This makes a lot of sense to me. When I’m feeling tired, I get that snacky feeling, especially in the evening. Getting enough sleep has to become a priority for me, and now I have more of an incentive to make sure I get my 8 hours.

Roaring for another weekend…and a weigh-in come Monday!

Can’t wait!
