Confessions of a Fat Girl 77: Comfort Food…Healthy Food

8th March, 2010

93.5kg. I lost 1.4kg in the week gone by. Not fantastic…but not too shabby.

After having skipped so many gym days recently, I made sure I made it there today. And it felt soooo good getting my endorphin rush! For the first time today, I achieved a distance of 10km on the treadmill. Yes!!!

Another thing I knew I had to tick off my list was checking on my shop. No matter what my reasons are, it is inexcusable how long I have left it, without touching base there. True, my girls have been great, and have kept the place going, but still!

Driving into Ikota, a wave of depression hit me. Everything was a reminder of my friend, Uzoamaka. The shawarma joint we ordered from, the parking space we often fought over, everything was a cruel reminder of the woman whose life had been cut short…just like that. And to make things worse, I saw that her shop has been stripped bare, to make room for a new tenant. The woman isn’t even cold in her grave yet, and her shop is already being let out.

Na wa oh!

I was too depressed to stay long in my shop, but thankfully, I met everything in order. But it was glaring to me that I urgently need to restock the place, as it looked pretty bare. That brings me back to my conundrum. Reinvest in the place, or use my money for the more profitable partnership I have with my sister-in-law, Ezioma?

Decisions, decisions…which, thankfully, don’t have to be made today.

Getting home, later in the afternoon, I knew I needed some comfort food, to make me feel better…but not of the unhealthy sort. I needed something that would excite my taste buds, but which I could eat, guilt free.

So, I decided on Thai Lettuce Cups, a recipe I found online a while back, made with lettuce, ground turkey meat, fish sauce, vinegar, garlic, lots of pepper, carrots, ginger, green onions, bell peppers, basil, juiced limes, and chilli sauce,. Basically, the recipe involved me heating a tablespoon of olive oil in a pan, over medium high heat, adding the ground turkey, the crushed garlic, the pepper, a few dashes of the fish sauce and the vinegar, and cooking until the turkey started browning, and then drained, and set in the fridge to chill. Then in a separate bowl, I combined the carrots, ginger, thinly sliced green onions, bell peppers, a handful of basil, the juiced limes, and chilli sauce, mixed everything well, and then added to the cooked turkey mixture. I refridgerated it, and served in lettuce cups, sprinkled with chopped, roasted cashews.

It was sinfully tasty, and was only 225 calories a serving. Not bad at all!

As I enjoyed my tasty treat, my mind started wandering again, and I thought of my cousin, Chidera. It has been 2 weeks since she sent me that text, and almost 3 weeks since she stormed out of Enugu. We have never, ever, gone this long without speaking, and I have started to miss her. But I still won’t call her…not just yet. After what she did, she needs to be the one to reach out, and not just via a flimsy, one-worded text message. By now, she would have seen Ogonna’s Facebook status, which has been updated to ‘Engaged’. The whole world has seen it, if the 532 likes it garnered is anything to go by. But she has chosen not to call to talk about it. Well, that’s her problem, because I have too much on my plate than having to babysit anybody!

Anyway, I have been on a quest to find a good non-dairy alternative to my regular cow’s milk. I have almond milk in my fridge, but it does lack that creamy texture that I sometimes crave.

I tend to avoid soy, because there is so much conflicting hype about it, some people will have you believe it’s a miracle cure, and others say it’s poison. But mostly I don’t buy soy milk because it tastes so nasty. However, I did find a supposedly ‘creamier’ one, when I travelled recently, and the good part is that the texture is exactly what I hoped for, and the flavor was surprisingly not offensive, compared to other soy beverages I’ve tried in the past. It made a very nice coffee drink, tasted good in certain flavored teas, and was really good splashed on to cool my morning oatmeal. But the bad is that it was awful in my regular PG Tips tea, and has absolutely no sugar. But even worse was the PMS it brought back, full force!

The change in my way of eating pretty much eliminated my ordinarily very bad PMS, so I was quite concerned when, late last week, and over the weekend, I started to get PMS full force. I was anxious and irritable like I hadn’t been in months, bloated, sore breasts, cramps…the works! I was like a lunatic, and it really upset me because my moods have been mostly pleasant and stable since getting off the sugar and other junk. Something was different this time, because before, when the moment my period started, all the PMS unpleasantness would go away, but this time I still have cramps and my breasts are still really sore. I tried to go over everything I ate, and the only thing that changed since getting back to my routine after the holidays was the soy milk. Of course I researched it, and yes, there is still lots of conflicting information, but based on what I’m going through, there is some truth to the statements about soy upsetting hormonal balances.

I’m going to avoid the soy, and see what happens next month. Otherwise, it’s back to the almond milk and the splash of plain milk in my PG Tips, but I’ll still be keeping my eyes open for something new…
