Confessions of a Fat Girl 74: Secretive Sister

4th March, 2010

I totally have the best husband in the world! Totally!

JJ and I talked about the possibility of Legachi and Marizu coming to stay with us, and he was so encouraging and accepting, that it almost brought me to tears. My husband is just the best!

The only downer was when he asked the question, “But, who will stay with your Dad?”

Hmmm. I hadn’t thought about that!

So, I posed that question to Ogonna, when we spoke this morning. She, too, seemed happy about the prospect of Legachi and Marizu coming to stay with me in Lagos. Luckily, she didn’t think this would be a problem.

“Don’t forget I’ll be in Nigeria more often!” she giggled.

Oh yeah. How could I forget!

“Meanwhile, you will never believe who e-mailed me yesterday, asking for my Nigerian number, as he needed to talk to me urgently!” Ogonna said.

I almost said Chiemela, but apart from the fact that it would have pissed her off, he obviously knows her Nigerian number, so that eliminates him.

“I don’t know. Who?”

“Kel!!!” Ogonna exclaimed.

My eyes popped. “Kel??! Kelechi?? Akwaugo’s ex?!”

“One and the same oh!” she answered in the affirmative. “I quickly sent it to him, and, check this, he called me not up to ten minutes after I hit the ‘Send’ button!”

“He called you??!!” I exclaimed again. “What did he want?!”

“Ihunna, you need to sit down for this oh!” she said, her voice rife with drama. “The man wants to get back with Akwaugo. He says he’s ended things with the Brazilian girl, and wants his wife back!”

I couldn’t close my mouth! Talk about a surprise, out of nowhere.

“So, why is he calling you and not Akwaugo?!”

“This is where it gets interesting!” Ogonna continued. “Apparently, he already told her this BEFORE she left for Nigeria!!! That your sister can kill somebody oh! When did she become this secretive?!!”

This didn’t make any sense to me. So, Kel had already approached Akwaugo with the possibility of a reconciliation before she came to Nigeria? So why was she still acting all moody and melancholy, especially when negative references had been made about her ex-husband? It didn’t make sense.

“What did he say her response was?” I asked.

“He said she promised to talk about it after her trip. But ever since she’s been back, he hasn’t been able to reach her. She’s always coming up with one excuse after the other!” Ogonna continued. “He thinks she might be seeing someone, and that was actually the reason he even reached out to me.”

I didn’t know what to make of this at all. None of it made any sense. My sister has spent the 3 years since her divorce, pining for her ex-husband. Kel coming back to her would be the answer to her dreams! Or at least, that’s what I’d thought. It doesn’t make any sense for her to be putting him off. One thing I know for sure is that she’s definitely not seeing anyone.

“Or could she just be posing?” I asked.

“I don’t know for that your sister. Apart from a 5-minute call after my engagement, I haven’t spoken with her since she got back to America.” Ogonna answered, with a deep sigh. “When I get there, I’ll find out what’s up with her!”

She went on to say Ifeanyi would stay with her for a few weeks, before leaving her to stay another few weeks to tidy things up at her Medical Practice and shop for a wedding gown. When she asked if I would be able to make it to the States before Easter, for her final dress fitting, I couldn’t help but tearfully agree. We have watched so many episodes of Say Yes to the Dress together, and I know it will mean the world to her, to have her sisters with her, when she concludes on her wedding gown. And if that’s a sacrifice I’ll have to make, then I’ll happily make it.

But trust her to spoil the mood when I asked what time she’d like me to pick her up when she flies in from Enugu on Saturday, and she reminded me that Ifeanyi has a home and chauffer driven car here in Lagos.

Sorry oh!

I tried to call Akwaugo several times later today, but everything kept going to her voice mail, both on her mobile and house phones. Could it really be work that’s taking so much of her time? Something is going on with my sister, and I really need to find out what it is!

With all this drama, I couldn’t make it to the gym, but I made sure I did eat healthy! I had a nice pineapple and banana smoothie for breakfast, and a chicken sandwich (with brown bread of course) for lunch, snacking on apples and nuts in between.

Not bad for a no-exercise day!
