Confessions of a Fat Girl 72: The Engagement

1st March, 2010

Another Monday, another weigh-in! Today’s number was 94.9kg. I’ll definitely take that 1.7kg loss. I have learnt that it’s not about the quick big numbers, but more about consistency! All that matters is that I’m on my way down!

And down, I must go, because what happened in my kids’ school today, left me totally stupefied!

That’s how I was walking back to my car oh, after walking my kids to their classes, and I ran into two mothers, whose kids are in my older son’s class. After the perfunctory greeting, one of them actually had the nerve to say “Ah! Obinna’s Mummy! I see you have started losing weight again. I was really worried when I saw you at the start of the term oh!”

I stared at her in shock! What made her think we were that familiar to have this kind of conversation? Before I knew it, the other Mommy jumped right in!

“I also noticed! I was shocked to see you back to your former big self, on the first day of school! I was really admiring your weight loss before we went on Christmas holiday, and was so sad to see you fat again!”

Fat again?!! Chaiii, Ihunna, you have suffered.

“But you’re getting there!” the other one said, with a thumbs up sign. “I see you’re on your way to the gym! Make sure you exercise well oh!”

I walked back to my car in a daze. Did that just happen? Had I just been a victim of the highest level of inappropriateness imaginable?! And it wasn’t as if these women were Agbani Darego! Give or take a few kilos, we were all in the same category! Chaiii! See my life!

The anger gave me the kick I need to tear it up at the gym! Who said anything about slow and steady? I must lose this weight, and fast!!!!

2nd March, 2010

JJ had a good laugh when I told him about my encounter yesterday, but I still can’t find the humour in it. As far as I’m concerned, those women only succeeded in insulting me, but in a very coded manner!

So, this morning, as I walked my kids to their classes, my anger was still burning. I saw one of them, but I walked past her, with a straight face. Nonsense! She’s even lucky I didn’t throw in a long hiss, accompanied with a good eyeing! How about she drag her own fat ass to the gym?!

Getting home from my workout, my phone beeped with a WhatsApp notification. It was a message from Ogonna. Clicking it open, I had to smile at the sight that greeted me; a picture of her left hand, with her finger adorned with a huge diamond ring. Hmmm! That was quick!

Since we left Enugu, just over a week ago, I knew she and Ifeanyi had been spending a lot of time together. Last week Tuesday, a week ago today, he had taken her to his home in Port Harcourt, and she had called me, gushing about how wonderfully everyone was treating her, and how he had introduced her to everyone thinkable. The whole of Port Harcourt was buzzing about Ifeanyi’s long lost, but found, love. She sounded happy, so I was happy…I guess.

I immediately called her, and she answered the phone with a squeal.

“He proposed last night!!!” she shrieked. “It was the romantic thing you can imagine. We went out for dinner, and by the time we got back home, the house was lit with hundreds of tea light candles, and rose petals were everywhere! And when I looked at him, he was already on his knee, and he was crying!!! Ihunna, he was crying!!! Next thing, I was also crying, and he asked me to marry him…and then he brought out this ring…”

I smiled, as I listened to my sister. “Ogo, I’m so happy for you!” and I truly was. “Una no dey waste time oh! That was quicker than I expected!”

“Ihunna, what are we waiting for? Ifeanyi turns 44 next week, and so will I, come May. Should we be wasting time, doing boyfriend and girlfriend, until we are 50?!!”

I nodded. She had a point though. They were two mature people, who knew what they wanted. Why wait?

“I already knew it was coming. Before we left Enugu, he had a looooong talk with Dad, in private, and I don’t have to be a genius to know what they must have talked about!” she giggled. “I knew he would propose, but I wasn’t expecting him to be so romantic about it!”

“And the ring is beautiful!!!” I remarked, staring at the image on my other phone. As a woman who loves her jewelry, I could tell it was some serious, serious bling! It was a Princess cut diamond, which looked to be at least 6 carats, set on a platinum band, which had probably another 2 carats worth of pavé-set diamonds. Wow!

“Ihu, you need to see it in the flesh! It is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life!” she squealed.

“So, I guess you won’t be leaving for the States this weekend, as planned.”

“No, I’m still going,” she answered, with a giggle. “Or rather, we are going! We’ll be flying through London, so we can meet his sons, and then we’ll go to New Jersey, for me to sort things out at the Practice!”

“Will your Partners buy you out?” I asked.

“Not at all. Ifeanyi and I have agreed that I can go every other month, and spend like a week or so. I don’t know. We still have to sort out the details, but I’m sure we’ll work out something!”

Interesting. So, she would get to eat her cake and have it. How convenient!

“Any idea when this wedding will happen?” I asked, almost scared about what the answer would be.

“May 1st!” she squealed. “So, you better start getting ready!!!”

I smiled to myself. My feelings about her fiancé aside, I have been waiting for this moment for years! My darling sister Ogonna is finally getting married!

That in itself is enough to fill my heart with inexplicable joy!
