Confessions of a Fat Girl 64: Dead to me!

Hearing the car, Ogonna broke away from Ifeanyi, and made her way to us, in a half run.

The way Akwaugo hugged her, you would have thought Ogonna had just been released, after being held captive for months…years even!

After hugging Chidera and I, Ogonna made her way to Chiemela, who only extended his hand in greeting.

“We’d best not upset your boyfriend over there with a hug, should we,” he muttered.

“Chiemela, it’s not like that…” she protested.

“Ogonna, I’m not here to fight with you. I promised you I’d come support you, and here I am,” he answered, a stiff smile on his face.

I turned to glare at the yeye Ifeanyi, who, by the way he was glaring right back at us, it was obvious he knew exactly who Chiemela was to Ogonna. I made eye contact with him, and he gave me a half wave, which I didn’t return. Yeye man trying to spoil a good thing for my sister.

As we made our way to the house, Legachi ran up to welcome us. Thankfully, Akwaugo was not as unfriendly as I had been afraid she would have been, so that hadn’t been too bad. What had surprisingly pinched me was how close I noticed Ogonna and Legachi have become. As we walked into the house, Legachi had her arm intertwined around Ogonna’s, and the two were whispering conspiratorly. And when someone tried to catch Legachi’s attention, she had yelled “I’m coming. I’m just talking to my big sister!”

Ouch! That had hurt. And I don’t even know why.

But that was soon to be the least of my problems.

Dad’s face lit up, upon sighting Akwaugo. “Who is that I see? Is that my bird? Is that my eagle?!!” he exclaimed, using the nickname he’d had for her as a child.

“Good morning, Sir” had been my sister’s cold response.

It had been subtle…too subtle for anyone else to notice, but Dad was no fool. He noticed the frost, and quickly retreated into his seat. To make matters worse, Chidera also stood by, with a frown on her face. I quickly ran over to embrace him, and started engaging him in chatty conversation…anything to diffuse the tension. This was the last thing the poor man needed!

“Daddy, this is Chiemela…the guy I told you about.” Ogonna introduced.

“Good morning, Sir.” Chiemela greeted, bowing in respect as he took our Dad’s hand.

Our very astute Dad, studied him for a few seconds, before letting out a slow smile. “Ah, now I remember you! You once helped me change my tyre, on one of the occasions I went to see Osita. I see you got rid of those glasses that were bigger than your body!”

As everyone laughed, I noticed Chidera’s face was as tight as Akwaugo’s, and I felt my anger rising. Akwaugo is one thing, but if Chidera thinks she can come and add to the tension, she’s in for a shock!

Ogonna’s attention soon got called outside, and as she walked away, I was torn between following her, or staying to referee the people inside the living room. I chose to referee. With Akwaugo and Chidera sitting as if they were being held at gunpoint, I was grateful that Chiemela had engaged my Dad in conversation, or else it would have been way too awkward.

“How come you are burying Aunty Felicia here?” Akwaugo asked suddenly. “Wouldn’t it make more sense to bury her in the family house in Achi?”

Dad had said nothing for a few minutes. “I already have one wife buried there. I cannot practice polygamy in the after life. When I am gone, I will go and join her. Let Felicia stay here!”

Akwaugo laughed. “Wife? Mom wasn’t your wife when she died!”

“Akwaugo!” I exclaimed.

“No…let her talk.” Dad said. “Why do you think she wasn’t my wife? Because we were separated? Because I had moved out? Because I had another wife? None of the above made her cease to be my wife, as we had neither gone to court for a divorce, nor was a brideprice refunded. So, my dear daughter, she was, and still is, my wife!”

Akwaugo opened her mouth to respond, but decided against it, shaking her head, and muttering to herself.

“Akwaugo, you haven’t been here a full hour, and you already seem so ill at ease! If you knew you didn’t want to be here, why did you come?!” asked my father, always one to go straight to the point.

“Not because of you, if that’s what you are thinking! I am here because of my sisters!” she spat back. “You are dead to me!”

“Akwaugo!” it was Chiemela’s turn to exclaim.

“Yes, clearly so!” Dad responded. “That’s why you presented yourself to your husband’s family…as a girl without a father! It’s no wonder they treated you the way they did!”

“Who has been telling you about me?!” she demanded.

“If you think I don’t keep a tab on my children, then you thought wrong!” Dad answered, the fire in his eyes showing he would not be bullied or intimidated by his prodigal daughter.

Akwaugo hissed, stood up, and tried to walk out, until she realized she didn’t know where she was going.

“You better come and show me the way to the room!” she snapped at me, as she somehow found her way to the corridor.

Walking to her, I noticed Chidera hot on my heels, and I turned around, to give her a piece of my mind.

“And where are you going to?!” I demanded.

“To stay with Akwaugo, and give her moral support,” she answered, her eyes dancing in what I knew was her gist mongering mode.

“If you know what is good for you, you better go and sit in the living room with Dad, or go make yourself useful with Ogonna! If you think you can come here, and add fuel to an already burning fire, then you will see another side of me! Inugo?! You had a good relationship with your own Father, God rest Uncle Osita’s soul. Please allow us build one with ours!”

As I walked away, I could feel her staring at me in shock.

Yes oh! I’m not going to let anyone make things any worse!
