Valentines Day!

After a rough few weeks, I am so happy that I am mentally in a place where I was able to have a wonderful day with my husband.

We went for Mass as a family, after which we bought takeaway from our favourite Chinese restaurant, and went home to enjoy the day, as a family. Gone are the days when we feel compelled to go out for a romantic dinner on Valentines day. Besides the fact that Lagos is usually a zoo on that day, we’ve been together long enough to know that Valentine’s day isn’t the only day in the year for romantic gestures.

But that one no include gifts oh!

As always, JJ surprised me with a beautiful and thoughtful gift (this year, he got me a beautiful watch, with my initials engraved on its face, in diamonds), alongside the usual bouquet of roses. The only thing missing this year was cake, and I knew it was because he’s trying to help me with this my weight loss anyway he can. Do I have the most thoughtful husband or what!

As the evening drew to a close, I got a BBM from my cousin, Chidera, asking what day I was travelling to Enugu, so that she could book her flight.

I didn’t know you wanted to come. I thought you didn’t like Aunty Felicia.

Wetin concern me with am! I’m coming because of you guys! When last were all 4 of us in the same room together?!

I smiled to myself. Chidera always fancied herself one of us sisters. From when we were younger, she never liked feeling left out.

Giving her my flight information for Tuesday morning, she proceeded to book her own flight.

This burial is going to be hot!

I woke up with one thing on my mind. Weigh in!!!

I managed to say a prayer, before walking to the bathroom, and hopping on the scale. 100.3 kg. A loss of 2.7kg. If it wasn’t so early in the morning, I would have screamed the house down!!! So elated was I!

It just helped motivate me further at the gym. I was all pumped and roaring to go, which is what I did for 165 minutes! I didn’t even believe it myself!

Later in the day, after settling the kids home after school, a driver from JJ’s office drove me to the international airport, to receive my sister…and Chiemela. Their flight landed at 5.45pm, and after an hour going through immigration, baggage claim, and customs, they finally walked out of the airport. Even though it had only been about two weeks since I saw Akwaugo, I hugged her like I hadn’t seen her in years.

“This your country na wa! What manner of heat is this?!” she exclaimed, sweat streaming down her face.

“You are sweating like this at night? What will happen when you see the afternoon sun?!” I laughed.

Chiemela was also drenched in sweat, and I could see he was struggling to keep his composure. Like my sister, he too hadn’t been back to Nigeria in almost two decades.

“Are you sure it’s okay for me to stay at your place? I could get a hotel…” he protested.

“Nonsense! It’s better for us to be in one place. It’s no problem at all!” I said with reassurance, as we loaded their luggage into the car. There was no need telling him how difficult it had been to get JJ to agree to house a man whom he felt was a complete stranger. Despite my telling him how Chiemela had been our childhood friend, to JJ, the fact that we hadn’t seen him in years made him a stranger, whether or not he was dating my sister. Thankfully, he had finally given in.

“Nigeria has really changed!” Akwaugo remarked, as we drove through town. “So many cars!”

I had to stifle the need to roll my eyes. Was Miss Americana expecting donkeys, or what?!

“So, your sister seems to really be enjoying Enugu, huh?” Chiemela asked, seemingly out of nowhere.

Akwaugo and I exchanged a glance. “Yeah…I guess you could say that.” I answered, not sure how much I really should be saying.

“I saw a lot of pictures on Facebook,” he continued. “I didn’t know she had that many friends here.”

“Ogonna was always very popular. It’s when she came to the U.S. that people stopped noticing just how wonderful a human being she is!” Akwaugo remarked.

“There’s this dude I keep seeing in her pictures though…” Chiemela continued, not even listening to Akwaugo. “From the tags, I see his name is Ifeanyi. They seem rather close…”

Akwaugo and I laughed nervously. “Close? No oh! He was her classmate in secondary school!” Akwaugo answered “And he’s married. Isn’t he married, Ihunna?”

Chiemela looked at me for confirmation, and I knew I couldn’t lie that kin bold faced lie. “He’s widowed, actually.”

“Ah. I see…” Chiemela remarked.

Akwaugo kicked my foot and glared at me, to which I shrugged helplessly in response. I couldn’t lie na!

When we got home, after introducing the necessary introductions, Chiemela had chosen to retire to bed immediately. It was obvious that he was still shaken by the fact that another man is keenly competing for the attention of his woman of interest.

“Na wa oh! Na Ogonna dey reign!” Akwaugo muttered, as she also retired early.

Hmmmm! The next few days are going to be very interesting indeed!
