“Na wa oh.” Akwaugo managed to say, after we had sat in silence for a few minutes. “What happened to her?”

“JJ didn’t say.” I replied, still in shock. How on earth could Mama Legachi be dead?! Someone I just saw about a month ago! Someone that had been so full of life and energy?! I just didn’t understand it.

“Dad won’t take this well.” Ogonna managed to say.

Duuh! You think?

Aunty Felicia had been Dad’s companion for over 20 years, the apple of his eye. Even a blind man would agree that their bond was a strong one, and with Dad’s recent health issues, I could see how dependent on her he had become. There was no doubting the fact that he was going to take the news pretty hard.

Feeling the need to be alone, I had excused myself and gone to the guest room, where I lay on the bed, pondering the news, and what the next steps would be. I will definitely have to go to Enugu as soon as I get back to Nigeria. If the news has broken him like I suspect it has, those kids will be at a loss about what next to do.

January 31st, 2010

By the time I opened my eyes this morning, it was way past 10am. Meaning I had slept for almost 18 hours. I hadn’t even changed out of the outfit I wore yesterday. Obviously, the shock of the news, as well as the stress from the last few days, finally took their toll on me.

I was still mentally calculating what next to do, when Ogonna walked into the room.

“Na wa oh!” she exclaimed. “I didn’t know you could sleep like this!!”

I sat up, still disoriented, and started trying to mentally put my day together.

“I had a long talk with Mellie yesterday.” Ogonna said quietly.

Mellie…Mellie…who on earth…?! Oh!!! Chiemela!

“When did Chiemela become Mellie?” I laughed, finally happy to have something to amuse me.

Ogonna didn’t even crack a smile.

“I told him everything…about all the verbal and emotional abuse we got as kids…how badly we were treated anytime we went to Enugu…everything…” Ogonna said, a bit measuredly. “I tried to paint a clear picture for him…but he seems to think we have been overreacting all this while. He…he wants me to go see Daddy as soon as possible.”

I looked at Ogonna in shock. Was this same woman I had been trying to convince for days about coming home to see Dad? Now, Cheimala had done it in a matter of minutes.

I doff my hat to him!

What was even more surprising? The fact that she will actually be flying out with me tomorrow!

Hmmm! What man can do!

I declined the offer to ride with her to New Jersey, to pack a small bag for her trip. I decided to get as much rest as I possibly can, because it might get real when I’m finally back in Lagos. If things had gone according to plan, I would have been trying to buy a few last minute things today. But in this frame of mind, shopping is the last thing on my mind.

February 1st, 2010

Ogonna arrived this morning, from New Jersey, accompanied by Chiemela. Akwaugo has chosen to remain on the fence, acting indifferent about our Dad’s bereavement.

Our flight took off at 7.35pm, and it felt good to have a travel companion for once. Ignoring the in-flight entertainment, we gisted all 9 hours of our flight to Amsterdam, the 3 hours of transit we had there, and the final 6 hours to London.

As we landed in Lagos, at about 5.30 pm, I was determined in my heart not to allow this be yet another reason to comfort eat. No…there’ll be none of that.

“Hello Lagos!” Ogonna exclaimed quietly, her first time being in Nigeria in over 20 years.

As the plane taxied to a spot, I said a silent prayer. Having Ogonna in town was more than anything I’d planned for. Even with Akwaugo refusing to participate, having Ogonna around is more than enough I hoped for.

But it’s so good to be back home!!!!
