Confessions of a Fat Girl 53: Manhattan

January 28th, 2010

Ogonna and I were out of her house as early as 6am this morning. We did the short drive to the train station near her house, and joined one of the rush hour train rides to New York’s Penn Station. By 8am, we had boarded one of the city’s famous Yellow Cabs, and were headed to Akwaugo’s apartment on the upper East Side.

Getting to her building, the doorman, who apparently recognized Ogonna, let us in without calling her, so everything seemed perfect for the surprise visit. Riding the elevator to the 28th floor, I didn’t know if it was the high speed ride, or the anticipation, that was giving me butterflies in my stomach. I allowed myself get distracted by happy thoughts about Akwaugo’s victory in getting this house, after her divorce. She and her ex-husband, Kel (born Kelechi, if you’re asking), had bought this home only two years before their divorce. I remembered how happy she had been when they got the place, and how excited she was at the thought of owning her own Manhattan condo. Kel had just made a high-price move from one blue-chip investment bank to the other, and had gotten a hefty sign-on bonus, not to mention a fat salary. Unfortunately, his fuller wallet and given him a more voracious appetite for women. It didn’t take long before he decided that his 38 year old, stay-at-home wife wasn’t ideal for his status, and he soon traded her with a big-breasted, big-assed 22-year old Brazilian intern at his firm. Unfortunately for him, his stay-at-home wife had once been a lawyer, and she knew how to grab him where it hurts. In the end, he left the marriage with less than half of their combined income, and a commitment to pay hefty alimony and child support allowances.

In the three years that have followed, Akwaugo has not only lost the depression weight she gained during the divorce, but also got a Graduate degree from Columbia University, as well as a part-time job as a Paralegal. With her two older children already teenagers, and the younger one about to become one, she found her stress levels very much reduced, and her time better be maximized.

Opening her door and seeing us, she actually burst out laughing.

“I knew it! I knew I would see you here!” she exclaimed, looking at me. “I knew you would be on the first place right out of Lagos soon. You’re even late sef!”

We were soon sitting in her imposing living room, with the ceiling-to-floor glass walls, overlooking Central Park.

Mehn! My sisters are really living life!

“Why has nobody heard from you?!!” Ogonna reprimanded. “You don’t do things like that!”

“Oh really? I don’t think I’m the only one that retreated! I don’t recall you calling me either, Ogonna!

The three of us sat in silence for a few minutes.

“So…your Dad, abi?” Akwaugo finally said. “Are you with her in this?” she asked, turning to Ogonna.

“I think you know the answer to that question.” Ogonna mumbled.

Look, we can’t keep avoiding the elephant in the room!” I exclaimed. “We need to talk! If you guys had only just responded to my mail, I wouldn’t have had to fly from one end of the world to another one!”

“What exactly do you want?” Akwaugo asked.

I opened my mouth to speak, but then closed it again.

What truly are the next steps?
