Confessions of a Fat Girl 49: Fry-Up

I finally decided to bite the bullet and see Ezioma. I might be condemned to being a fatso for the rest of my life, but I don’t have to be a poor one.

Oh, and speaking about that.

It doesn’t look like I’m anywhere close to eating healthy. Yesterday, I tried. God knows I tried. After the morning school run, I got home and made a pineapple, orange and lime smoothie. A few weeks ago, I would have found it yummy, but after drinking it this time, I was on the prowl for ‘proper food’ less than an hour later. Trying to redeem myself, I attempted one of my fantastic grilled chicken recipes. For where?! I ended up using the chicken to eat rice.

It’s like my brain has refused to remind my body that it used to love these healthy foods…crave them even. I read the earlier part of my journal, and marveled at the gusto with which I wrote about my healthy meals. I really really genuinely used to enjoy them. I can’t even imagine how!

So today, I didn’t even bother. I had a fantastic fry-up meal of toast bread, poached eggs, sausages, bacon, mushrooms, baked beans and potato wedges, for breakfast. And it was wonderful!

I was finishing off the last slice of bread, when I heard the sound of Ezioma’s car in the compound. Opening the door for her, I saw her face register a range of emotions; from excitement to shock to disappointment.

“Ihunna!” she moaned “What is this now?!”

I chose to feign ignorance.

“What are you talking about?” I asked, leading her into the house.

“Is that what you ate?!” she exclaimed, when she saw the plate of fried mess on the dining table.

Drat! I can’t believe I forgot that there.

I shrugged as I made to clear the dishes. I don’t owe anyone any explanation.

“And yet I have been there, drinking smoothies and eating salads every day, since we got back from Nkwerre! Every spare minute I have, I’m jogging and exercising!” Ezioma lamented. “Babe, you’ve been my inspiration! Please don’t do this!”

For the first time, I took a really good look at her, and realized she didn’t look quite as large as the last time I saw her. Wow, talk about a tale of 2 cities!

“Ezi, don’t worry about me” I said, with a forced smile. “I’m just going through a lot of issues now. I’ll sort myself out soon…promise!”

With a deep sigh, she brought out her iPad, and we started talking about this business of ours. With less than a month before the first major festivity of the year (Valentines’ day), time is running short. So, instead of our initial plan to travel together, we decided that Ezioma would make a quick 2-day dash to London alone, see her suppliers, get good deals, and put together the luxury gift bags. I, on the other hand, am to dust my little black book, and start marketing it to everyone I know.

That should be easy…right?

When she left, I finally decided to have a look at the man in the mirror, and was left amazed at the speed with which I have put on weight. Haba! Memo to body…I have only been off my diet and exercise for less than 2 months, so why does it almost seem like I am back to square 1! It can’t be that bad!

Or is it?

I need my sisters like a bad habit now. I really need to talk to them! Maybe they will have a better idea how I can recover from this abyss I find myself in!

So, I picked up my phone to call them…but I couldn’t. I tried to draft an e-mail, but couldn’t find the words.

I’ll just have to do this without them!
