Confessions of a Fat Girl 32: Making Notes

December 10th, 2009

With my 3-day detox over, I decided to take stock of exactly where I am, and made some notes about things to do, to fast track my progress:

  1. Exercise regularly: This I already do, with my regular morning routine of going to the gym, and our Saturday morning estate run. It’s true that, sometimes last-minute plans get in the way, but I find that I generally stick to my schedule once I’ve put it in ink.

  1. Calorie Count: Before I started this journey, I didn’t realize just how many calories I was consuming. But now, I do. Tracking what I eat helps keep me aware of what I am putting in my mouth. Even on the days when I don’t count calories, but I track what I eat, which keeps me accountable.

  1. Eating fresh fruit with breakfast: It’s such a small thing to do, but it sets a healthy tone for my whole day. Add to the fact that fruit is low in calories, and good for you, is an even bigger incentive. I have tried to mix things up with smoothies and juicing…and it has really helped!

  1. Reduced portion sizes: This might seem like a no-brainer, but just eating less of my usual servings helped me lose weight. Even for things that weren’t on my fitness plan. I have realized that I can’t die, abeg!

  1. Read a lot of health and fitness magazines: I find that these act as constant motivation for me, and keep healthy eating and fitness interesting. They also give me lots of great ideas for meals and workouts.

  1. Meal plan: Every weekend, I sit down and plan my meals for the week. Making my food myself has given me more control over how many calories are in my meal. I’m also able to save money by making sure I use up all of my fresh produce.

  1. Keep it moving: In this journey, there are bound to be a few mistakes. Maintaining my weight is all about balance. If I overindulge at a party, or mindlessly munch throughout the afternoon, I don’t must not give up. I just have to make sure my next meal is healthy and move on.

When I finally made it to the gym, I did the upright bike for 25 minutes, followed by legs/shoulders/core work.  I had told my trainer to go hard on me, but at a point, I had to beg him for mercy! Make e no go kill me oh, kilode! So, he went easy on me…sort of. He gave me some exciting new things to add to my routine like the Single arm row with the cable, as well as Assisted pull-ups.  I actually enjoyed them, and am excited to start doing.  He got me off the squat machines, and doing regular squats again.  My legs were SO fried by time we were done!

Only 1 more day of gyming to go in 2008!

On to other things, I have been drinking tea in the evenings after dinner, and it is like a miracle cure for the munchies!  I used to drink it before I had the kids, and sort of forgot about it. When I start to feel munchy, I get up and make some tea, and that solves everything.  It gives me something to ingest, is also relaxing, and the calorie cost is literally zero! I want to stock up on more sweet tasting teas like apple/cranberry.  No caffeine of course.

Tomorrow is the Christmas party…and I’m more than ready! Bring it on 🙂

  1. Haaa! Ladies, you are making me blush.

Okay, it’s a complete fruit detox. So far I have used only watermelon and apple. One watermelon and one apple will make like 2.5 litres of smoothie. In the morning I add ugwu and one teaspoon of flaxseeds to the mix.
Breakfast: ugwu, watermelon and apple smoothie with flaxseeds
Lunch and dinner: watermelon and apple smoothie
I drink a lot of water
If I get hungry, I eat apple as they are negative calorie foods like they need more calories to get digested.
Day two is over, thank God. I still exercise too because I read somewhere here in this blog that sweating is good for detox too.
    That’s what I have done so far…
