Confessions of a Fat Girl 175: Divorcing

September 29, 2010

Pattering around in the kitchen this evening, I couldn’t help but watch Aunty Caroline, humming as she prepared my father’s dinner. Ever since Akwaugo planted the seed of suspicion in my head, the thing has germinated and taken fruit. I watched her as she lovingly stirred the pot of pepper soup, and carefully sliced sweet potato slices to accompany it, paying meticulous attention to the meal she was serving her man, and wondered how long he had been that…her man. I had a flashback to her sitting in our living room, back then in Enugu, talking politics with our father and wondered if anything other than harmless banter was happening back then. If what my sister said was anything to go by, they had been doing a lot more than discussing Shagari politics…a lot more that would have eventually led to my parents’ divorce.

“Ola edo’m!” she said suddenly, startling me. “Is everything okay?”

I saw that she was looking at me intently, a knowing smile on her face. This woman is just too wise! It’s so hard to get anything past her!

“Is there anything on your mind?” she probed further, still looking at me.

I toyed with the idea of coming out with it, of asking her outright if she had lied about having a platonic relationship with my father. It was on the verge of my lips to just ask her. But I realized I really am not ready to hear the truth. If she admits it, what am I going to do? I can’t keep her here, knowing she betrayed my mother, her own sister so badly…and at the same time, I can’t ask her to leave as dad won’t take it well.

So I just decided to let sleeping dogs lie.

As she walked out of the kitchen, tray in her hand, I couldn’t help but marvel at her beautiful figure. Such a beautiful woman, even at her age. I felt myself feeling a mix of admiration, anger, envy, regret and frustration. This puzzle was the last thing I needed to add to my issues.

After having a bath, I sat on my bed, pen and paper in my hand, trying to recap all the plans I had made at the shop. I noted the things I needed to restock, which was pretty much the whole shop, and made a mental note to hire an Accountant. It’s time for me to start doing things the right way. Having a good grasp of numbers and MS Excel is no longer enough for me to effectively run my business.

JJ didn’t get home until past 10pm, and I looked up as he walked into the bedroom. It was quite uncharacteristic of him to come home that late, and I wondered what had kept him. Seeing the look on his face, I knew something was wrong.

“JJ…” I began, my heart in my mouth.

“I was with Chinedu…he just got back from his trip to China, so I went to see him. He and Ezioma are divorcing.” JJ answered, sounding shell shocked.

“Whaaaaat?!” I exclaimed. Nooooo! This couldn’t be happening! Not Chinedu and Ezioma! No, this couldn’t be happening! How could they be getting a divorce?!

divorce

JJ sighed deeply, lying on the bed still wearing his shoes, something I would have gone crazy about before, but this time I didn’t even notice it.

“Even Chinedu is shocked. He said he just got an e-mail from her while he was still in China, telling him she was going back to London and was never returning. He thought it was a joke, until he got home and met divorce papers.” JJ continued, before looking at me. “You mean she didn’t tell you anything? I thought you two were close.”

My mouth hung open, words failing me. So did I oh…so I did I!

“And he doesn’t know why?” I asked, trying to make sense of the whole thing.

JJ shook his head. “According to him, he has no idea…”

“Then why hasn’t he gone to London to see her? He should be there, instead of here complaining to you!” I exclaimed, my frustration rising.

“I tried to suggest the same thing, but he doesn’t want to hear it. I think he’s also very hurt that she decided to leave, and he feels if that’s what she wants, then so be it.” he answered.

I sat there, staring at nothing, digesting the implication of what I had just heard. Chinedu, JJ’s older brother, and Ezioma were the most stable couple I knew. They had been dating even long before JJ and I met, meaning they had been a couple for almost 30 years! That wasn’t something you just threw away…just like that! And for Ezioma to have made that kind of decision, without even letting me know…no, there is more to it than meets the eye!

Something fishy is definitely up!

Looking at my husband, I couldn’t help but wonder what this meant for us. With all the solid couples around us dropping like flies…Chidera and Somto, Chinedu and Ezioma…what does it mean for us? Will be able to stand the test of time?
