Confessions of a Fat Girl 155: Love Weight

September 4, 2010

Our last few days of holiday were nice and relaxed, as we were indoors mainly, resting and catching up on gist. Ogonna has finally agreed to leave at the end of September and Ifeanyi has extended his stay till then, so he can return with his wife. I think he just wants to make sure she comes back and doesn’t push her return date back…yet again. Wise man!

Akwaugo, Chiemela and her kids brought Legachi back yesterday, and we had a nice family barbecue last night. It’s at times like this that I am so grateful for what I have. Looking at my sisters so happy and in love, I couldn’t help but think how, this time last year, they had both been single and praying for a life partner. Not in my wildest dreams would I have thought that both their prayers would be answered in the space of less than a year. It just shows that we should never underestimate this God we serve!

Those were the words I shared with Chidera later that night, when I saw she was about to start slipping into a bad place. The cheer and excitement that had replaced her heartbreak had started to fade, and it was clear that she was returning back to her pain. Maybe it was the fact that she only had a few days left with her kids, maybe it was seeing the rest of us all loved up, whatever the trigger, there was no way I was going to allow her go back.

“You don’t know how much of a difference one year can make!” I’d told her.

She’d scoffed in response. “I sure do. This time last year, I was still married…”

“You were in an unhappy marriage! Not only are you free of that, in a few months, you will have your beautiful baby in your arms!”

“A beautiful baby with no father!” she’d retorted.

“Chichi, we just have to trust God on this one. You don’t know what plans He has for you. Look at Ogonna and Akwaugo! Look what God did for them this past year! You just have to believe!”

From the casual nod she gave, I wasn’t sure if I’d been able to get through to her. But I knew I couldn’t force it either. I almost share Ogonna’s sentiments about not leaving her here alone. I’m not sure if she’s in the right emotional condition for that. But Ogonna has started making plans for a suitable caretaker, so hopefully she’ll be in good hands.

As if all the worrying about Chidera wasn’t enough, this morning, I decided to weigh our luggage on the scale, ahead of our departure tonight. Good idea or bad, I chose to take the opportunity to weigh myself as well. Hopping on the scale, my eyes almost popped from their sockets.

222 pounds???! 101kg?! No, the scale had to be broken! How could I have gained over 13kg in 3 weeks? How on earth was that possible?!!!

I proceeded to use the scale in Ogonna’s bathroom, and subsequently in her clinic, but they all gave the same reading, give or take a few decimals.

I have undone about 8 weeks of work…just like that! Because I wanted to please my husband and eat like a cow, I have only succeeded in displeasing myself.

To be honest, I knew I was getting heavier, especially as my clothes started to feel rather snug, and my inner thigh rash returned, an indicator that they’ve been rubbing against each other a bit more. I knew I would see a few additional kilos, but I had programmed my mind to seeing between 3 to 5kg…max! Not 13! Gosh, this has just dampened an otherwise lovely holiday.

I actually thought all the waka about in New York would have helped me manage my weight. But alas, here I am…almost back to where I started.

“My dear, let’s not even talk about weight oh!” Ogonna remarked, as I complained. “I have put on 20 pounds since I got married! I can’t wait to get to Nigeria so I can lose it.”

“I haven’t even had the courage to step on a scale in weeks! I’m afraid of what I will see!” Akwaugo remarked.

That was when I noticed that my sisters were actually looking a bit rounder than normal…and it made me wonder. Is it that when a woman is in love and happy, she must always put on weight? People keep talking about ‘love weight’ and I have never really believed it, but here I am…staring its evidence in the face. My sisters and I are all happy and in love…and fatter than we’d like.

alterations

I think I need to conduct some extensive research when I get back to Nigeria…to find a way to strike a balance. Because I am determined to find a way to make my husband happy…and lose this weight at the same time!

So help me God oh! So help me God!

  1. Weightloss for married women who have the tendency to be fat is tricky, I am constantly struggling with my weight. Just one week of over enjoyment leaves a big dent in my progress. God help us. An for Chidera am sure she will be fine.
