Confessions of a Fat Girl 153: You Complete Me

Akwaugo finally got her ring!

It was the most beautiful thing ever! There, in a private dining room at Caravaggio Ristorante, before her entire family, Chiemela had gotten down on one knee and asked Akwaugo to marry him!

None of us had seen it coming…well, none of us except our father and Akwaugo’s children, all of whom Chiemela had asked permission prior to the night. Akwaugo herself had been so caught up with organizing the night that, for the first time in her relationship with Chiemela, she wasn’t focused on wondering whether he would ever propose to her. The dinner had grown from being just our immediate family, extending to a few of our cousins in the New York City area, and even Chiemela’s cousin. In hindsight, that should have been a giveaway for the rest of us. But it hadn’t been, and we had proceeded to enjoy the most exquisite Italian fine dining, with all the kids on their best behavior.

As we awaited dessert, the background classical music stopped and we were surprised to hear Kenny Lattimore’s For You playing. Before we even had time to ponder the sudden change in music, Chiemela was kneeling before my sister.

And Ogonna and I had squealed in excitement.

“Akwaugo. Ibu obim! Onyem na eche! You complete me! I love you with all my heart! Will you marry me?”

My sister had been stunned silent, as tears started streaming down her face. She barely managed a nod before all of us broke into jubilatory applause. Neither Ogonna nor I could back the tears. Even Legachi was tearful. Heck, I even saw some tears from our father’s eyes. It was the most beautiful thing ever.

On Sunday, still high on the euphoria from the night before, we had all gone to Coney Island to spend the day. As we hadn’t been able to factor in Disney World Florida, into our itinerary for this trip, we figured we might as well give the kids the next best thing. It had been a wonderful day; fun for the kids, and fun for the adults, who were still excited about the newest engaged couple. Akwaugo and Chiemela were all smiles, and pretty much glued at the hip the whole day. It looks like we are having a Christmas wedding after all! Whoop whoop!

It was such a wonderful weekend that when I opened my eyes today, and remembered I had to pick Chidera up from the airport, I actually felt guilty for enjoying myself when she is going through such a difficult time.

My sisters insisted on coming along to the airport, so at about noon, we’d set off for JFK. Chidera didn’t get past Customs till well after 3pm, and she looked even heavier than I remembered. But she also looked incredibly pale.

“See your belle!” Ogonna teased, as we all embraced her.

She had smiled in response. I could tell she was trying her best to act excited, but there was no disguising the pain she was nursing.

“Wow!” she exclaimed suddenly, having sighted Akwaugo’s engagement ring. “I see Chiemela put a ring on it! Nne, this ring na rock of ages oh! It’s huge!!!”

For the first time since her engagement, Akwaugo actually tried to downplay it, even attempting to change the topic! I knew it was because she didn’t want to hurt an already sensitive Chidera.

But by the time we got back to Manhattan, there was no escaping it. We just had to talk about what exactly had happened with Okei. Considering how enthusiastic he had been only a few weeks ago, I couldn’t reconcile that with his sudden change of heart.

“There was no warning at all.” Chidera said, affirming my thoughts. “There was nothing to indicate he was going to change his mind. He moved into the house from the day after you guys left…and everything was perfect. We talked…we planned…we finally were able to map our future, and decided what we would do after the baby was born. Then about a week later, last week Friday to be exact, he got a call from their Parish Priest, asking him to please see him urgently. He didn’t even want to go…I was the one that convinced him to. So on Sunday, he went to see the man. What was supposed to be a brief visit turned into a whole day’s affair. He didn’t come home until 9pm that night. The minute I saw his face, I knew it was over.”

“What did he say?” Ogonna asked.

“He just said that after talking with his Priest, he didn’t think it was right for us to be together…and that he was going back to Awele…” she shrugged. “That day, I’d actually had a premonition that something like that would happen…so it didn’t take me too much by surprise. I told him I understood, he went to pack his things, and that was it. He left.”

“Nne, it’s better this way.” Akwaugo said, touching her knee sympathetically. “You’ll be fine!”

Chidera smiled and nodded. “I know I will. I wish I hadnt foolishly allowed myself to love him…a little boy, can you imagine…” and with that, her voice broke, and the tears finally came.

Group-hug style, my sisters and I had huddled around her, and allowed her cry. It was better for her to get it all out once and for all. After the storm, her rainbow would come, and the pain from her heartbreak would be over.

That is what I pray for her from the bottom of my heart.
