Confessions of a Fat Girl 145: Sensible Snacking

August 5th, 2010

In all the recent drama, I completely forgot about my father’s trip to Lagos next week, for his visa interview. Of course, the fact that we haven’t spoken since his return from Abuja didn’t help jog my memory either. Anyways, it turns out his other daughters, and even my husband, have been in regular contact with him, so all is set for his arrival this weekend.

“You two are so alike!” JJ teased last night, after his reminder of my father’s impending arrival was met with a long hiss. “Stubborn to the core!”

I’d been so mad with JJ, I hadn’t even bothered responding. I don’t know why everyone seems to think I’m being stubborn, childish and unreasonable because I can’t understand why a man will want to marry his late wife’s younger sister! Granted, there was another man in between, but still!

But he arrives on Sunday, so I reckon I have to figure out a way to be civil.

Apart from that, today was a good day. I tried my old clothes, like I promised myself I would and not only did I comfortably fit into my size 16 trousers, I was able to actually squeeze into an old pair of size 14 jeans!!!! Well, squeeze is the operative word, as I could hardly walk, let alone zip it, but it’s progress. A few months ago, the jeans wouldn’t have gone past my calves. In fact, trying them on wouldn’t even have been a consideration. But I’m grateful for the progress I’ve made. As I have just about a week until travel day, and it’s unlikely I’ll be able to lose weight when we’re on holiday, I might just respect myself and buy size 16 clothes jeje (or size 12, as my American people would call it). But I’ll get a few size 14 pieces to use as a target. If I keep things up, I might fit into them, perfectly, before the end of the year.

On another note, Okei was here last night, and he and Chidera looked so happy and relaxed, a vast change from all the anxiety from previous weeks. I’m looking forward to the weekend when I’ll be able to talk with Chidera at length. I’m curious to know what he is up to, now that he has left the bank. I’m also curious to know how things are with his (I don’t even know if I should call her his ex) wife. I still can’t help but feel guilty about what we are doing to that young lady. Truth be told, she’s the victim in all this. But alas, it is what it is.

As I had my afternoon snack, I couldn’t help but remember just how negatively I used to think of snacking before. In my mind, snacking meant cheating on your diet. I thought it most surely led to weight gain, and that limiting in-between meal snacks would keep me from getting fatter. I totally agree that frequent, mindless snacking on junk food is a really bad habit and can lead to weight gain, but smart snacking is crucial when trying to eat for optimal health. Sensible snacking minimizes hunger between meals and keeps one’s metabolism humming.

So what makes a snack sensible? High fiber and a good balance of protein and fat for lasting satisfaction and, of course, portion control.

Fruits like apples make great snacks, and are especially satisfying when eaten with a sprinkling of cinnamon (it always gives me the illusion of a nice apple crumble). Carrots and other raw veggies eaten with a yogurt dip is another tasty option. Dried fruits and nuts are another favourite, but when you talk about a fantastic and healthy treat, my all time favourite is eating crackers with a slice of cheese, sprinkled with some raisins or any other dried fruits. It almost tastes like cheesecake…but without the guilt.

pepper-jam

Other healthy snack ideas I found online and will be trying include mini whole wheat bread eaten as toast, or as a wrap with chopped veggies; natural yogurt and fruits sprinkled with a few pistachio, cashew or almond nuts. The secret with snacking is that you have to put it together yourself, as prepackaged snacks that claim to be high in finer can even be more dangerous as they are often full of junk like high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils.

Snacking definitely fits into my healthy lifestyle. Two delicious and nutritious between meal snacks keep me from feeling deprived and then overeating at meal times.

Anyways, that’s my musing for the day. I have to resume at the gym tomorrow. I better burn as much as I can before we leave for America next week, so if I (God forbid) gain weight during the trip, it won’t be too bad!
