Confessions of a Fat Girl 141: Leave Him For His Wife

August 1st, 2010

Ezioma and I participated in our first funfair today. It was for a private school in Ikeja, and we pretty much provided them with all their rides, games and party favours. Yes, it was good business, but we soon realised that the profit margin is a lot lower than compared with our luxury gifts’ business. There’s only so much of a markup one can place on toys and treats. As for the rides, considering the heavy capital expenditure, it will take quite a number of fairs and parties before we’ll be able to break even. We’re now left with the realisation that we can only make the big bucks during the Christmas and Valentine’s periods…maybe Easter, if we play our cards right. The rest of the year, we have to scale down our expectations and expect only modest margins.

The good part was that the kids had a blast! I took all 6 kids along, mine and Chidera’s, and seeing the enjoyment on their faces was proof that Ezioma and I had done good with the things we had acquired. Legachi and Marizu had also tagged along, so it made for even more fun.

Eventually, it was time to head back home. Before Ezioma set off for her house in Agbara Estate, we agreed to meet sometime during the week to reconcile our numbers. Thankfully, I didn’t have to worry about the drive, as Marizu had done the honours, driving us back in JJ’s truck (which was the only thing that could fit everyone in).

The car parked in front of our house was an indicator that we had visitors, and I wondered who it could possibly be. Getting into the house, I saw Chidera seated in the living room with two other women. At first, I had thought nothing of it, until recognition of the younger woman made all the blood almost drain from my body. And the ashen look on Chidera’s face was proof that my guess was right. That was Okei’s wife.

“Oh, Ihunna…you’re back!” Chidera had exclaimed weakly, forcing a smile, before turning to the older woman. “This is my cousin, Ihunna. She has been taking good care of the kids and I. Ihunna, this is Dumebi…one of my oldest friends and former colleague in the bank.”

My own smile had been strained as well, as I welcomed them to our home. I quickly took a seat next to Chidera, in a bid to offer her moral support, just as I scrutinised the two women seated before us. The older one, the Dumebi, looked to be around our age, and she looked pensive…restless almost. The younger lady on the other hand, the one I recognised from Newscafe as Okei’s wife, looked like she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. This obviously wasn’t a courtesy call.

Dumebi met my gaze and nodded. “I can see you’re wondering why we are here…but I have a feeling you already know. Before you came, I was just talking to Chichi about this situation. To be honest with you, I just don’t know what to do!”

I looked from her to Chidera, wondering what exactly they had discussed and how much detail they had gone into.

Dumebi had sighed deeply. “Awele, please go to the car and wait for me. I need to talk to Chidera alone.”

I watched in surprise as the young lady stood up dejectedly, and started walking out of the living room. This wasn’t the demeanour I had expected from a woman confronting her husband’s pregnant lover. I had thought she would be angry, loud, and maybe even violent. I hadn’t expected this wall flower kind of behaviour.

“She can actually wait upstairs. My younger sister can take her there and keep her company,” I immediately volunteered. We had already wronged her enough. There was no need to add keeping her in her car for only God knew how long to our list of sins.

After Legachi had led Awele away, Dumebi had sighed again. “Chidera, I was hoping from the very bottom of my heart that this would be a bad dream! Awele is my niece. Her mother is my oldest sister. She is only 26 years old. When she and her mother came to tell me about the woman Okei, her brand new husband, had impregnated, I was mad! I raved and ranted about the harlot that would be so heartless as to destroy a marriage of not up to 6 months! Imagine my shock when they called your name, Chidera! I couldn’t believe it. I told them they were lying! The same Chidera I went to training school with all those years ago?! The same Chidera who has helped me through so many tight spots in the bank?! The same Chidera I admire and respect? I told them I was 100% sure it wasn’t the Chidera I knew. That was why I brought her here, so that I could show her that the woman I know couldn’t be the same one they were talking about! Only for me to get here and see this…” she said, gesturing at the swollen Chidera. “How did this happen, Chidera? How?!”

Neither Chidera nor myself had an answer. We’d just stared back blankly.

“The sad part is that her husband has made up his mind to leave the marriage. If not, it is something the two of them could have resolved amicably. Who would have expected a young man like that to leave his new wife for a woman who is knocking the door of 40?! Chidera, you didn’t do well at all!”

Chidera had surprised me by falling to her knees. “Biko, Dumebi…I am sorry. It wasn’t my intention. I had just separated from my husband, and I wasn’t thinking!”

“A young boy like that, haba Chidera! A newly wedded man?! Or didn’t you know he just got married last December?!”

“I swear to you, I didn’t plan it! It just happened…” Chidera pleaded, almost in tears herself.

Dumebi had sighed for the umpteenth time. “So, what about now? Okie says he is in love with you…that the two of you have picked up from where you left off. Is it true? Have you still been spending time with him, in spite of everything?”

When Chidera didn’t answer, Dumebi leaned in. “Chidera, are you willing to leave Okei for his young wife?”

I looked at my cousin, willing her to say something…anything. If she could just answer in the affirmative, maybe we could get some respite from this situation.

But no. Madam Chidera just kept mute.

Dumebi had sat back in her chair, shaking her head and laughing. “I suppose I have my answer,” she said, rising to her feet. “I have to warn you. When I spoke with Awele and her mother, they were looking for anyone who could introduce them the MD of the bank, to make a formal complaint about the matter. Awele might be timid, but trust me, her mother is not! I was able to stall them, as I was so sure that we weren’t talking about the same person. But now that it’s clear that they weren’t wrong about who you are, I know they’ll probably resume their search. It’s only a matter of time before they can get audience with the powers that be. You need to prepare yourself, Chidera. It’s already not looking good for you. Having an affair with a junior colleague is one matter, getting yourself impregnated is another. I wish you all the best!”

She had risen to her feet, called out for Awele, before walking out of the house. Awele had made her way downstairs, cast a sad look in our direction, before walking after her aunt. I was rather puzzled because the girl I had seen at Newscafe had been chatty and animated, and not this subdued shell of a woman. Or could it have been a a ploy on her own part? Was she deliberately putting up a show as a heartbroken woman? Was this practice for when they would meet the management of Chidera’s bank? I just didn’t know what to make of anything.

As soon as they left, Chidera had left the living room, without any word to me. As much as I wanted to talk and brainstorm the way forward with her, I knew she probably just needed to be alone.

I couldn’t believe that what had started as such a wonderful day had ended in such a highly dramatic way! Jesus, please take the wheel!

  1. Chidera obviously doesn’t understand what she is about getting herself into. The earlier she forces herself out of Okei’s life, the better for her life!
