Confessions of a Fat Girl 130: Postpone the Inevitable

Well, things have gone from bad to worse.

It was a tearful Chidera who came home from work today. Any hopes we’d had about Amanda not causing any trouble got blown in the wind today.

According to her, late this afternoon, Amanda had called her on the phone, and the conversation had gone something like this.

“I went to your old branch today oh…I didn’t even know you had left that branch,” a mischievous Amanda had started saying. “And I saw that your boyfriend…that fine guy you were talking to in the car park. I was so surprised to find out that the boy is just a Banking Officer!!! Babe, you no try oh! A whole Senior Manager like you!”

Chidera said she had just been about to end the call when Amanda had continued, saying. “I had a very, very interesting conversation with him! I was surprised when he said you told him you and Somto are back together…and that Somto is the father of your baby! Chichi, you can lie oh!” she had said, with a loud cackle. “I was too happy to set the young man straight. I told him you haven’t seen Somto in months!!!”

Chidera said her head had started spinning with the realisation of what Amanda was saying. “So, it’s either you are too ashamed to have your little lover as a baby daddy, or you’ve been a naughty girl and have been sleeping around with different men? Which one is it? Chaiii, when I call Somto’s sister, the gist will be too sweet!”

That was when Chidera had finally ended the call, had hurriedly packed up her bags and left the office. As she relayed the story to me, I was painfully aware of the fact that we had not only Somto’s family to contend with, but possibly the ensuing office gossip, as I don’t trust Amanda not to spread the story around their bank. It was getting way messier than I had envisioned.

And it was about to get messier.

After I had managed to send Chidera to bed early, and I was thinking about the mess we were potentially dealing with, I got a phone call from my gatemen about a strange man asking to see me. Even before I asked his name, I already had a funny feeling in my gut, and so I wasn’t surprised when I heard it was, in fact, Okei.

I contemplated asking them to dismiss him, but something told me I’d want to hear whatever he had to say. So, I gave them permission to let him in.

The minute he walked into my living room, the devastation in his eyes spoke volumes. There was no more hiding around the fact. He knew. And I couldn’t bear to look him in the face.

frown-clipart-FROWN

“Why did she lie to me?” he’d asked, his voice choked whisper.

I sighed deeply, knowing the jig was up. “There are a million reasons why, and you know all of them!” was all I could manage.

“Where is she? I need to see her. I need to speak with her.”

I shook my head. “She’s had a very rough day, Okei. She only just fell asleep.”

“Then I’ll wait. I’ll wait till tomorrow if I have to,” came his defiant response.

That was when my own feathers rose in anger. “It’s past 8pm, don’t you have a wife to go home to? Why are we pussy footing around the fact that you are a married man?! You want to wait for her till morning?! And what will you tell your wife?!”

“Chidera is more important to me. This baby is more important to me!” he answered, his voice trembling.

I was torn between wanting to slap him on his wife’s behalf, and drawing him into a hug to console him. Men!

“Come with me.” I muttered gruffly, after weighing all the options. I knew this crazy boy would make good on his word and not leave my house till he had a chance to see Chidera. Even if I kicked him out, he would probably spend the night in his car. Nah, I figured it was best not to postpone the inevitable.

Knocking on Chidera’s door, I said as sweetly as I could. “Babe…you have a visitor”

The speed with which she sat up in bed was proof to me that sleep was still eluding her, and the shock on her eyes when she saw who was standing beside me made me wonder if bringing him up to her room had been a good idea.

The three of us had just stood there in silence for a few minutes; Chidera and Okei’s gaze a mix of anger and sadness (from Okei’s side) and defeat and surrender (from Chidera’s side), while I was just the confused one in the middle.

“Do you want me to stay?” I asked Chidera, ready to pull up a chair and sit through their conversation if I had to.

After a few seconds, Chidera shook her head. “It’s okay. I’ll speak with him.”

As I walked out of the room, I considered lingering around the corridor, to eavesdrop on their conversation. I was curious to hear what exactly he had to say, and how Chidera would justify having lied to him in the first place. I was also curious to hear what direction they would decide to take, considering the very obvious elephantS (note, plural) in the room; he’s married, and he’s her colleague…her junior one at that.

But I decided to respect her, and instead went down to the living room to wait.

Dear Lord, please let all of this end well.
