Confessions of a Fat Girl 129: The Secret Is Out!

Well, the secret is out…and not in a good way!

With her bump now visible, it’s been clear to all that Chidera is pregnant. But as she is now in her Head Office where they all think she’s still happily married, no eyebrows have been raised yet. After being able to confidently walk around with her bump without getting anything other than cheery “Congratulations!!” from her colleagues, she started feeling overconfident. So, rather than stay confined to the Head Office, she agreed to attend a regional meeting in another branch…their Apapa branch specifically. As she relayed the story to me, it wasn’t until she walked into the banking hall of the branch, and was face-to-face with Amanda, her husband Somto’s older sister’s best friend, that she realised she had just shot herself in the mouth.

According to her, Amanda’s eyes had widened to the size of saucers when she saw her, bump and all!

“Chidera!” she had exclaimed, but her eyes not leaving her stomach. “Wow! This is quite a surprise! You’re pregnant?!”

Chidera said, at that moment, she’d wished the ground could just open up and swallow her. Even though she didn’t verbalise it, she knew Amanda was actually saying “Who the heck is responsible for this pregnancy? Because it sure as heck isn’t your husband!”

“Yes, I am,” Chidera said she’d answered, as casually as she could manage.

“I didn’t know you and Somto were still….erm…in touch!” Amanda pressed, walking closely by Chidera who, by now, was trying to make a quick dash to the meeting room.

Chidera recognised the bait for what it was, and chose not to say anything in response.

“Well, are you? Because, as far as I know, he hasn’t been back to Nigeria since your separation!” Amanda continued, a mischievous glint in her eye.

At that point, Chidera knew she might as well just go for the jugular. She was dead already anyway!

Looking her straight in the eye, Chidera had answered, “Yes, I haven’t seen Somto…and no, it’s none of your business. Have a good day!”

And with her heart pounding so hard her ears were pulsating, she’d pushed open the door of the meeting room and walked right in. Alas, everyone was already seated, so she wasn’t able to sneak in quietly. As she made her way to her chair, she could feel all their eyes on her, but the most piercing gaze was a familiar one…Okei’s.

Chidera said the guy hadn’t taken his eyes off her, from the minute she’d walked into the room and all through the 90-minute presentation. The one time she had been brave enough to make eye contact with him, she had seen in his eyes shock…and confusion. With a racing heart, she worried that he might have figured it out.

Immediately the meeting was over, without even waiting for her colleagues she’d come with, Chidera said she’d made a quick dash for her car, hoping to be able to make a quick getaway. But Okei had probably anticipated this, and he was waiting for her there.

“Okei!” she’d exclaimed, startled at seeing him standing by the door of her car. “What are you doing here?”

“Chidera, we need to talk,” he’d said. “I didn’t know you were pregnant!”

She said she’d shrugged casually. “I didn’t know I had to broadcast it to the whole world!”

“Is it…is it mine?” he’d asked, reaching for her hand.

She withdrawn her hand quickly. “Don’t be silly!” she’d said, with a forced laugh. “Why would you think it’s your baby?!”

“I know you weren’t seeing anyone else. I know I was the only one you were with!” Okei said, standing so close to her, she could feel his breath on her face.

And then, she had come up with the worst lie ever.

“It’s my husband’s baby, Okei! We are back together!” she’d snapped at him.“Now, why don’t you run along to your wife, and let grown folks handle their business!”

She said she knew she had hit him below the belt…that she had hurt him deeply. But, at that point, she didn’t think she had a choice.

“I see,” he had mumbled, as he stepped away. “Well…I’m happy for you. And congrats!”

And with that, he had walked away. She said she’d watched him leave, and her heart had broken into a million little pieces. Even though she knew it was the right thing to do, she was crushed by the finality of it all.

With a deep sigh, she had taken her eyes off him. But something far worse lay ahead of her. In the not-so-far distance, she caught sight of Amanda, standing by her car with her hands on her hips and an amused look on her face. She had seen the whole thing!

As she and Chidera made eye contact, she had clapped her hands, laughing hysterically. She’d pointed at Okei as he walked away, pointed at her stomach, and laughed even harder.

Chidera said she had contemplated running over to Amanda, to try to tell her that it wasn’t what she was thinking, but somehow, she knew doing that would be not only futile, it would also add more fuel to the fire.

In defeat, she had gotten into her car and started the journey back to the island.

As she relayed the story to me, my stomach dropped to my feet. It was bad enough that Amanda, and for sure Somto and his family, now knew that Chidera was pregnant. Them knowing who the baby daddy is is not a good thing at all…not for Chidera, and not even for Okei.

“What am I going to do now?” Chidera asked, her voice a whimper.

Words failed me as I looked at her. I am just as confused as she is!
