Confessions of a Fat Girl 123: Aunty Caroline!

June 2nd, 2010

I had a great meeting with Ezioma yesterday. The drive to Festac wasn’t too bad, and we had a very productive session indeed. The first of our funfairs is at the end of this month, and we’re pretty much good to go. Apart from a few logistics here and there, we’re ready!

But as happy as I was about that, it was something else that got me riled up this morning. For the third week in a row, Legachi has pushed forward the date for her move to Lagos. For someone who was so excited about the prospecting of moving here, it raised several alarm bells for me. At first, I thought maybe she wanted to wait for her brother, Marizu, who is moving here at the end of this month of June, but something told me that still wasn’t the reason. So, when I got her text, informing she wouldn’t be arriving this weekend as agreed, I immediately called her to demand an explanation. And eventually, she caved.

“Sister Ihunna, I don’t want to leave Enugu before Daddy gets back from Abuja.”

Huh?! Abuja?!!

“But I spoke with him over the weekend, and he didn’t say anything about being in Abuja!” I exclaimed.

Legachi sighed. “Sis! He has been there for over three weeks now!”

A cold wind blew, and I knew it had nothing to do with my air-conditioning. I didn’t even have to ask any questions to find out who he was with in Abuja. It could only be one person.

She whose name must not be repeated. Our Aunty Caroline! My late mother’s youngest sister who had almost wrecked their marriage…long before it had collapsed eventually. After our mother had thrown her our of our house all those years ago, my sisters and I had developed a strong enmity for her, and kept her well at arm’s length. I couldn’t believe our father had found our way back to her arms.

Not missing a beat, I disconnected the call with Legachi and dialled his number.

“Daddy, what are you doing in Abuja?!” I demanded, without even bothering with any pleasantries.

To my amazement, the man actually chuckled. “I have been waiting for this call!”

“I spoke with you on Sunday, and you said nothing about being in Abuja!” I seethed, wishing I could teleport myself to where he was, so he could see the true extent of my rage.

“I didn’t know I had to ask your permission first!” he said, his voice reverting to his stern, authoritative tone, which immediately reduced the tempo of my own anger.

“Are you with her?!” I demanded, my voice a few decibels lower now.

“If by her, you mean Caro, then yes, I am!”

“Daddy, how could you?! How could you, when you know how strongly Mom felt about her?!”

“First of all, whatever incident you are referring to happened almost 30 years ago, and even that was a case of your Mother over-reacting! There was nothing going on between Caro and I then, and your Mother completely misread the situation!”

“But what about now? You have been with her for 3 weeks! Are you still saying there’s nothing going on?!”

“Ihunna, I’m a 70 year old man. I think I’m old enough to do whatever it is I want to!” he said, and I knew he was struggling to keep his own temper in check. “When Mama Legachi died, Caro reached out to me, and we talked for a long time. Her call made me so happy. Hearing her voice reminded me of…” his voice broke “…of your mother. We have spoken every day since that time. And as soon as we were through with the wedding festivities, I was the one who took the decision to come and visit her here!”

“What are you saying, Dad?!!” I exclaimed, not wanting to believe what my brain was interpreting for me.

“I’m saying that I do not want to be alone. I’m saying that I need a companion. I’m saying that I deserve to live out my last days in happiness!” he answered defiantly.

“So….so you’re going to marry her?!”

“I came her to convince me to come back with me to Enugu…and now, she has agreed. So, yes, I am going to marry her!”

I’m not sure if the line got disconnected before the phone slipped from my hand, or if the phone slipped out of my hand and then the line got disconnected. All I know is that I was in a trance for the next few minutes after that call.

Our dad was marrying she who should not be named! My sisters had to hear this one!

And so I called Ogonna, and told her everything in one long diatribe.

“Are you serious?! Wow! That’s good news oh!” came my sister’s shocking response.

I looked at the phone, to be sure I had dialed the right number.

“Ogonna, did you hit your head or something? Did you hear what I just said?!”

“That Daddy wants to marry Aunty Caroline? Yes, I heard you.”

“The same Aunty Caroline who caused Mom so much grief! The same Aunty Caroline that we have hated for years!” I felt the need to remind her.

“Ihunna, we’re not kids any longer! What was all that hatred even about? Over a supposed affair that happened in the 70’s? Is that what my pant should still be on fire about? C’mon, give me a break!” Ogonna hissed.

My mouth opened in exasperation. Who on earth was this woman???!!

“I was even hoping she would come for my wedding sef. It crossed my mind to invite her, but knowing you and Akwaugo, I didn’t want anything that would create a scene.”

I shook my head and found somewhere to sit. “Ogonna, I can’t believe you are saying this.”

“Ihunna, you better allow that man live his life. If that is his choice, all of us need to get with the program and accept it! You are in your husband’s house, I am in mine, Akwaugo could very well be headed to another’s…but yet, we want to fast track our father’s path to the grave by subjecting him to a life of loneliness?! Not I oh! I won’t be a part of that! In fact, I am going to call him now to tell him I support him! You better grow up!”

As she disconnected the line, I stared at the phone, shocked at being on the receiving end this time around. My head was still spinning from my sister’s shocking about-face!

When I recovered, I dialled Akwaugo’s number, knowing that she would surely feel as strongly as I felt about the matter.

  1. When they always play that card of loneliness and be happy for the rest of their life, it reminds me that women indeed love very differently from men. Will a 70yr old woman think about remarrying?
@ihunna this is the reality, this happened to my friend and it caused a lot of rift in their family, end of the day the man remarried and the new wife encouraged the rift and they do not talk to their father..No need wasting the precious moments left on war. I do take my mom’s advice seriously which is – Live your life girl, enjoy it, do not manage it and May God bless us with long life cos these men eh…………………
