Confessions of a Fat Girl 120: Baby Daddy

May 30th, 2010

As Ogonna still had an extra day before leaving for Port Harcourt with her husband, we decided to have a girls day out today. So, after Church, Chidera, Ogonna and I headed to The Palms. Thankfully, JJ offered to take the kids out for some ice-cream, so we didn’t feel too bad about just absconding.

Getting to The Palms, we were too late for the movie we really wanted to see (Sex and The City 2) and rather than see another movie we didn’t want to, we decided to wait for the next screening of our movie, scheduled almost three hours later. But we didn’t mind. It was more of an opportunity to enjoy some girlie time. So we headed to one of the nice restaurants in the mall, and settled in for a great meal. Ogonna agreed that it was a nice cheat day, so nothing was off bounds for us. Before long, we were tucking into a juicy platter of snails, chicken wings, tiger prawns and goat meat, with some yummy fries on the side. Every mouthful tasted like pure heaven!

Midway through the delicious meal and sweet gist, I noticed Chidera suddenly go quiet, with her gaze fixed on the door. Ogonna also noticed the change in her demeanor and, in unison, we both looked in the direction of Chidera’s gaze and saw a couple being led to a table by a waiter. Maybe it was the strength of the gaze of the 3 women, as the man looked up in our direction and, even though it was fleeting, the look of recognition on his face was unmistakable. Quickly, Chidera looked away and suddenly started paying her food 100% attention. Ogonna and I exchanged a knowing glance, before I looked in the direction of the couple again. They were both young, obviously in their 20s or early 30s, and their shiny wedding bands suggested they were probably newly weds. But for newly weds, the man seemed way too distracted, as he kept stealing glances our way.

Ogonna leaned in to Chidera and whispered “Chichi, is that…”

Without answering, Chidera rose to her feet. “I’ll be right back. I promised to pick up something for the boys from The Game.”

“Ahn ahn! You won’t finish your food?!” I exclaimed.

“Please ask them to pack it for me. I’ll meet you guys at the cinema!” and with that, she darted out of the restaurant like a bat out of hell.

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Ogonna remarked, and I nodded. One didn’t have to be genie to figure out what was going on.

We had just run into Chidera’s baby daddy!

I couldn’t focus on my meal any longer, as I stared at this young man. I could see why Chidera had lost her head as he was extremely good looking; tall, lean, and with skin the colour of smooth milk chocolate. But from the disconcerted look on his face, he didn’t appear to be a player. Seeing Chidera had destabilized him too much for what they had to have been a casual fling. His wife, on the other hand, was a cute little thing, who couldn’t have been more than 5 feet tall, but was clearly a chatterbox, as she talked enough for herself and her distracted husband. Soon, she got a phone call, and I saw her gesture to her husband as she walked out of the restaurant. No sooner was she gone did the guy get up and walk over to our table.

“Good afternoon…” he began nervously. “I…is Chidera coming back?”

Ogonna and I looked at each other, and as I contemplated a suitable answer, Ogonna smiled sweetly at him.

“She just went to the mall to pick something up. Are you…are you a friend of hers?”

“We work…worked together, before she got moved to our bank’s head office,” he answered.

“Oh? But the two of you didn’t even say hello!” Ogonna remarked, and I almost kicked her under the table. What manner of mischief was this?!

“She probably didn’t see me,” he said unconvincingly, “Could you please do me a favour? Could you please ask her to call me? My name is Okei.”

“Of course! Can I…can we have your number, so we can give it to her?” Ogonna asked, pulling out her phone.

“She knows my number,” he answered, with a hint of a smile.

“I think you should still let us have it. She recently lost a lot of her contacts, so she might no longer have it!” Ogonna said, with another sweet smile, making me almost wonder who this stranger I was having a meal with was!

Hesitating a bit, he reeled off his phone number to Ogonna.

“I didn’t even introduce myself. My name is Ogonna, and this is my sister, Ihunna. We’re Chidera’s cousins. She actually lives in our house now.”

With the last piece of information, I saw his eyes light up. “Will it be okay to have your number?” he asked.

“Of coooourse!” Ogonna answered, as she gave him not only hers, but my phone number as well.

Just then, his wife walked into the restaurant, and I saw her eyes scan the place, looking for her man.

“I think your wife is looking for you!” I said, with a deliberate sharp edge in my voice.

Okei must have heard the edge, as he looked at me. The very brief look we exchanged said it all. Yes, I knew about his affair with Chidera, and yes, he knew I knew.

“What the hell was that about?!” I demanded, when he had gone back to his table.

Ogonna hissed. “You and Chidera should be there acting like little kids. That young man deserves to know about his child on the way!”

“The man is married!!! A newly wed, for that matter!” I whispered hoarsely.

Ogonna threw her hands up. “I’m not going to seek him out to tell him anything. That’s not my place! But if he wants to see Chidera, I’m going to make sure I do everything in my power to make sure that happens. We don’t need another child in this world growing up without a father!”

I watched my sister, exasperated! I had forgotten how opinionated and stubborn she can be. I decided it was in our best interest not to tell Chidera what had just happened, as that would be sure to upset her.

I just have to think of a way to explain things if the guy ever calls my phone or, worse, shows up on our doorstep!
