Confessions of a Fat Girl 114: Resting Heart Rate

Today, I dragged myself out of bed in time to join my Power Walking group by 6am. I was surprised not to see my pal, Loretta, there. Come to think of it, she hadn’t been at Ogonna’s wedding. I’d kinda expected her to be there, not only because I’d invited her, but more because she knows Ifeanyi, at least through his late wife. I reckon traveling all the way to Enugu and/or Port Harcourt hadn’t been convenient for her, and I made a mental note to call her later in the day.

Doing the power walk was a little weird without my companion, but it was rousing nonetheless, and by the time we were done by 6.45am, I felt kilograms lighter! I was still on an endorphin high when I did the school run, about half an hour later, and when I made it to the gym afterwards. I didn’t realize I had become such a super star at the gym, because everyone, right from the guards at the gate, remarked how it had been ages since I’d been around. I had no idea my 5-week hiatus would be noticed, but it sure felt good.

I had such a fantastic workout today. I feel really good, positive and energized! I can’t say enough about how good exercise makes me feel mentally and emotionally. The feeling of accomplishment that leads to that happy feeling that lasts all day, not to mention the really good post-workout high. I’m not going to blow smoke though, it’s hard and I get sweaty, smelly and out of breath but a nice shower after the small daily investment and I’m set up for the day.

My trainer talked about one’s resting heart rate, and it made me remember when, I think it was early last year, when I was about 30kg heavier, mine was topping out at 90+ beats per minute, which is very high for someone my age. This meant my heart was working very hard at rest, which put me at risk for a heart attack. A high resting heart rate can also lead to excess glucose production, which can lead to insulin resistance. Very scary stuff. Since I’ve taken up exercise and taken some weight off, my resting heart rate is around 71 bpm, which I’m really pleased about and hope to improve that even more as I progress.

On another note, I was thinking about changing my way of thinking to something more affirmative. I’ve realized that I use such phrases as, “I need to…” or “I have to…” and then I never seem to get around to doing what I have or need to, like cleaning the toilets or getting in that daily workout. I do it all the time and sometimes I get frustrated because my inner child rebels against these thoughts. It’s quite counterproductive, especially when I’m trying to get healthy and fit (which does take time, work and planning) and balancing it with my family, home keeping, my business, and everything else.

So, I’ve decided to try a new tactic. I will attempt to replace the other phrases with “I’m going to…”. This might help create a new mindset and keep the motivation up and momentum going.

To perfect an already great day, I spoke with Akwaugo this evening. She too has settled nicely back at home, and they are planning to have the meeting between Chiemela and her kids this weekend. She has also started studying for the New York Bar exams, and hopes to get a better legal job soon. The only downer is that she wasn’t impressed with Chidera’s decision to keep her baby, and was even less impressed with her decision not to hide out in America for the duration of the pregnancy.

“So, she wants to carry belle in that Naija?! And she thinks people wont talk?!”

“Akwaugo, she is at peace with her decision!” I answered emphatically. “You should see her now…so happy and cheerful! And excited!!!”

“Excited indeed!” Akwaugo scoffed. “Let’s see how excited she’ll be when she has to explain her situation to her children!”

Akwaugo! Ever a mood killer!

Well, we refuse to be daunted, and I am with Chidera in being excited over the bundle of joy that will be here before the end of the year. Whatever comes our way in the course of waiting, we shall tackle it together!
