Confessions of a Fat Girl 109: Port Harcourt

7th May, 2010

Friday soon came along, and Akwaugo and I had to make our way to Port Harcourt, for Ogonna and Ifeanyi’s Thanksgiving service. JJ and I decided it would be too much hassle for him to come with the kids, and as Chidera couldn’t get time off work today, Akwaugo and I had to go alone.

Since our talk on Wednesday, Chidera and I haven’t been able to speak on the matter any further. I waited up for her that Wednesday night, but she (deliberately, I think) didn’t return home until very late. On Thursday, she was out of the house in a flash, and by the time I got back from running a few errands that evening, she was already back home, and supposedly ‘asleep’. I don’t know if she’s already gone ahead to have the procedure, or if it’s something she’s still waiting to have. It’s so frustrating to feel this locked out of her life!

I was in no mood to talk about, and thankfully, Akwaugo didn’t bring it up as we flew to Port Harcourt. Instead, we had talked about Chiemela, and how we thought he was definitely going to propose any minute now. We talked about when he would finally meet her kids, and expressed hope that the meeting would go smoothly.

By the time we got landed in Port Harcourt, we were in incredibly high spirits, which were further boosted by seeing our beloved sister, who had come to receive us from the airport, with her husband and stepsons in tow.

“Na wa oh! For only us?!” Akwaugo exclaimed, seeing the entire family. “Nne, we must be really important oh!”

The young boys chose to ride in the escourt car, while Akwaugo and I rode back to the house with Ogonna and Ifeanyi. Just as I’d expected it to be, it was a tastefully done home…nothing too elaborate or flashy…but classy! From the way Akwaugo was looking around, I could tell she was also impressed. And in just one week of marriage, I could already see my sister’s touches here and there.

“Don’t tell me you brought Egenti here, Ogonna!” Akwaugo laughed, as she picked up a very familiar statue, of the bust of a cowboy, which Ogonna had bought from a yard sale many, many years ago. Akwaugo and I had nicknamed it ‘Egenti’, for reasons even I can’t remember!

“Did you expect me to leave him in America?!” Ogonna grabbed her statue, laughing. “Give him to me jor!”

Looking around, I could see it wasn’t only Egenti that had made it back to Nigeria. Even her TV sofa had found its way to her new living room. But nothing looked out of place. All her furniture looked like it belonged there.

She gave us a tour of the house, which was way larger than it looked from outside. I don’t know who to give credit, Ifeanyi or his late wife, but the house is an architectural masterpiece. But what pleased me more, as we went on this tour, was the sincere reverence the members of domestic staff have for my sister. Each person we passed was so excited to meet ‘Madam’s sisters’, especially those who hadn’t been opportune to travel to Enugu for the wedding.

Later in the day, as Akwaugo showered, and I settled into the room we’d decided to share (even though we had been offered separate rooms), Ogonna crept in.

“Why are you sneaking around in your own house?” I remarked.

“Sssssh!” Ogonna shushed me frantically. “Is she having her bath?” she asked.

“You can hear the shower, Ogonna!” was my sarcastic, and rather impatient, response.

“I wanted to talk about Chidera…” Ogonna said, still whispering. “Did you tell her my suggestion? Did she agree?”

I shook my head and sighed. “She’s decided not to keep it…”

Ogonna’s shoulders slumped, and she looked crestfallen. “But I asked you to take care of her, Ihunna!”

“Take care of her, not hypnotise her!” I exclaimed. “I tried, but she has made up her mind.”

“Tell her I will take the baby! Tell her I’ll look after it!” Ogonna insisted.

“Ogonna!!!” came Akwaugo’s voice from the bathroom door. “Has that been your plan all along?!”

Even I had to wonder the same thing, as I looked at my oldest sister in shock.

“Of course not!” Ogonna answered defiantly, but not entirely convincingly. “I just don’t want her to have to terminate this pregnancy.”

“Well, there’s nothing we can do if she’s decided to do it already.” Akwaugo muttered, as she changed clothes.

“Has she done it already?” Ogonna literally screamed.

“I don’t know, Ogo! She’s literally been a recluse. I hardly even see her in the house.” I answered sincerely.

Ogonna put her hands on her head. “And yet you left her alone in Lagos! Haiiii! Ihunna, I entrusted her to you oh!!!”

“Come, what is your own sef?!” Akwaugo retorted. “So what should Ihunna have done? Should we have stayed in Lagos just to babysit a grown woman? Should we not have come for this thing?”

Ogonna had no answer.

“Ogo, all we can do is pray for her. It’s out of our hands.” I said.

Ogonna sighed deeply and nodded. “You’re right…You’re right…”
