Confessions of a Fat Girl 106: Message from Mom

3rd May, 2010

As Ogonna left with her husband and in-laws on Saturday night, she whispered hoarsely in my ear, “Biko, nedo ya anya! Take care of her!!”

Ogonna hardly ever speaks Igbo, but anytime she does, it’s scary how she sounds exactly like our Mom…and I never, ever take it lightly when she does. With her parting admonition, I got chills down my spine. My Mom had just given me a firm instruction to take care of her niece, Chidera, and I knew I had no choice but to obey.

As Chidera, Akwaugo and I whispered long into the night, wondering what the best thing for her to do was. When I told her I felt like our Mother had given me instructions through Ogonna’s parting words, Akwaugo had sneered at the very insinuation.

“Which kind message from Mommy! Biko, go and sleep! I think your brain has already gone to bed, before your body!”

Of course! How could I expect anything different from the ever-cynical Akwaugo.

Sunday morning, Chidera left for Lagos. I had actually forgotten that she wouldn’t be able to leave with us on Monday, because she had to get back early to resume at work. She hadn’t said much from the time she woke up, and as she got into the taxi taking her to the airport, as she gave me travel instructions for her children, who were to return with us on Monday, I wrapped her in a warm embrace. We didn’t even have to say any words. In that embrace, I told her I was there for her, no matter what. Thankfully, as we would be under the same roof in Lagos, we would hopefully be able to talk about the situation better.

Later that morning, we had all gone with our Dad to Church. Ogonna and Ifeanyi’s Thanksgiving Mass will be in Port Harcourt next weekend, so we didn’t have that to contend with…thank God. It was just my siblings and I, and the grandkids, worshipping with my Dad. As the old man strutted into the Church, he was like a peacock, with it’s glorious feathers in full display. Having his family around him had obviously filled him with pride, which was evident as he introduced us to nearly everyone who walked by.

Getting home, we hosted Chiemela’s parents to lunch. When he’d mentioned on Saturday, that his parents would be coming over, Akwaugo had smiled smugly, with a raised brow.

“Why is your family coming? Is there something I should know?” she’d asked slyly.

“I don’t know what you are talking about! It’s just old friends reconnecting…that’s all!” Chiemela had answered with feigned surprise.

Yeah right!

It turned out to be a very congenial lunch, with good-natured banter between the older people. There was no mention of anything to do with asking for anyone’s hand in marriage, but we all knew that this lunch was a precursor to that. It was basically Chiemela’s family coming to wet the ground, so to speak. And from the way my father laughed and chuckled, and beamed like a Cheshire cat, it was clear that he knew what was really going on…and he was ever so excited about the prospect of not only having the younger man he had grown so fond of as a member of his family, but also over the prospect of being able to walk Akwaugo down the aisle, especially after having not had that priviledge when she married the first time. It was like a do-over, and one he was clearly grateful for.

Today, Monday, we all left for Lagos. Chiemela went straight from the local to the international airport, as his flight back to New York was scheduled for this evening. Akwaugo won’t be leaving till next week, as we have all decided to attend Ogonna’s Thanksgiving on Sunday…meaning we will be flying to Port Harcourt on Friday. But from her excited and animated behavior, it was clear she knows what awaits her in New York…a proposal. It was hard not to share her infectious excitement. After the last few years she has had, finding love again has been like the salve to a niggling wound.

Chidera hadn’t returned from work when we’d gotten home, and barely exchanged any conversation when she finally did. After nibbling at her food, she’d excused herself, and retired to bed early.

“Na wa oh!” Akwaugo remarked. “Chidera needs to make a decision…and very quickly too! Time is going!”

“This is not the kind of decision one can rush…” I mumbled in response.

“Oh, so is it when she is in her 2nd trimester that she will make that decision??” Akwaugo retorted.

Knowing the kind of emotional turmoil Chidera would be going through now, not only because of her spiritual conviction, but because of the emotional devastation I knew awaited her on the other side of the abortion wall, the last thing I wanted to do was rush her into any decision she’d regret.

“Ihunna! I hope you’re not considering encouraging her to keep this baby!”

“Akwaugo! Mom told me to protect her…” I protested feebly. She might not believe it, but I am certain that it was our Mom talking to me through Ogonna.

Akwaugo sighed deeply. “If that’s your plan, you better be aware of the road that lies ahead of her. It won’t be pretty!”

I nodded, fully aware of the murky waters we’d have to cross, what with having to face the world, carrying another man’s child, when the ink on her divorce papers wasn’t yet dry. It would be messy, to say the least.

But be that as it may, if that’s what she decides, then I will support her 100%!
