Confessions of a Fat Girl 102: Homecoming!

Homecoming was sweet! I don’t think I have ever been separated from my family for as long as I was away this time. Seeing JJ at the airport yesterday, I almost burst into tears! Gosh, it feels so good to be back home!

It also felt good to have both my sisters spend the night with us. This has never happened before, and the kids were super excited to have their 2 aunties over, at the same time! And with Chidera already there with her own kids, we had a full, and very happy house.

And God bless Chidera! She had organised the baddest pounded yam and egusi soup meal ever, to welcome us back home. I gave Ogonna the side eye, as I descended on mine, daring her to resist this criminally delicious feast. But the babe threw away her dieting, and wacked the pounded yam like a native.

Pounded-yam-egusi-and-shaki

“Na wa oh! See how you are rolling those balls like a pro!” I exclaimed.

“Be there be forming aje butter! If you and I were eating from the same plate, you would have gone hungry…because by the time you finish rolling those small balls of yours, I for don finish tey tey!” she answered, laughing.

“Look at your sister!” I said in Akwaugo’s direction, who was forming ladylike, and eating her own with a fork.

“Ogonna, follow Ihunna and rub palm oil all over your fingers, you hear? You that are getting married next week. Let’s see how quickly the stain leaves your nails! You will just scare Ifeanyi away with yellow, smelly fingers” Akwaugo remarked smugly.

“Ta, mechu onu, Akwaugo!” Chidera interjected. “Which kind of palm oil will stain for up to a week?”

Even though Ogonna laughed it off, and continued her meal, I knew that was the last time she would eat with her fingers before the wedding. I gave Akwaugo a dirty look. Spoil sport!

But better than all the friendly banter was spending some quality time with my boyfriend…my boo! It’s amazing how JJ still gives me goosebumps and butterflies, even after all this time. We talked into the night, with both of us bringing each other up to speed on what happened in the two weeks we were apart. Even though we spoke multiple times a day when I travelled, we have always had this habit of saving the juicy gist till when we see. I had given him snipets of what had happened with Ogonna, Akwaugo, and Chiemela, but it was only last night that I gave him the full gist, and he was highly amused by their love triangle, and even more amused by the Kel bust-up. And after we had caught up on gist, we caught up on…well…other things!

This morning, I had to force myself awake by 8am, as our flight to Enugu was scheduled for 12.35pm. Considering I only managed to sleep at 5am (thanks to jetlag), I wasn’t at all amused by this. I didn’t even have time to get on the scale, as planned. It was a mad dash to get ready, and haul Ogonna’s one million bags into the cars (yes, plural!) taking us to the airport. Chidera’s leave doesn’t start until next week, so she will join us there on Tuesday, with JJ and the kids arriving on Wednesday. Chiemela is expected on Thursday, so it’s looking to be a fun, fun wedding!

We landed in Enugu at 1.55pm, and the good surprises continued when we saw our Dad in the arrival lounge, waiting for us! Our father had actually come to receive us from the airport. My heart soared, as I saw that he has put on weight since the last time we saw him, and was standing much straighter. Such a handsome man, even at his age! And from the way Ogonna and Akwaugo squealed, I wasn’t the only one excited to see him. I’m sure passersby were wondering why grown women were jumping all over their Dad, as if we were teenagers. If only they knew that, for all the time wasted, we might as well have been teenagers to the man.

Legachi and Marizu completed the welcome party, and had helped haul Ogonna’s truckload of luggage to the car park.

“I thought you were exaggerating when you said you had a lot of luggage!” Dad remarked. “Thank God we came prepared. I almost didn’t rent the van, but Legachi insisted. Did you bring the whole of New York with you?! We do have things here in Enugu, you know?!”

Legachi made a face at her father. “Daaaaady! How many times will I tell you that it’s not the same thing?! In fact, the load is not even as much as I’d thought it would be sef!”

Dad shook his head, and proceeded to his old Mercedes Benz, which he still insisted on driving himself, closely tailed by his new favourite daughter, Akwaugo. She had her arm interwined around his, and I had a feeling she was bringing him up to speed on the new development with Chiemela. I smiled, thinking what his reaction would be. It was no secret that Chiemela had warmed his way into the old man’s heart, and I knew hearing their news would make him very happy indeed.

Ogonna, Legachi, Marizu, and I proceeded to ride with the luggage, in the Hilux van they had rented. As we rode through the streets, my heart soared. The last time we’d been here, it had been for a funeral, and I had been too consumed with the whole Ogonna, Chiemela, and Ifeanyi love triangle, to really take in the sights and sounds of this beautiful town. But with the cool breeze blowing my face, and the gist and laughter from my siblings in the car, I was extremely happy to be here again!

What a difference a few months can make!
