Confessions of a Fat Girl 101: “I’ll find you…and I’ll kill you!”

21st April, 2010

The only word I have for our last few days is blessed! They were nothing short of God ordained, and more than made up for all the wahala of the last few days

The day after the bridal shower, Ogonna had agreed to come back to NYC with us, and we had spent the whole of Monday just fooling around as sisters, and had gone shopping for a few last minute items for the wedding. That evening, Akwaugo had taken her kids out for dinner, to tell them all about Chiemela. We knew how nervous she was about having to do this, but she had been surprised by how well her kids had taken it. With most of their friends’ parents divorced, having them get back in the dating game wasn’t only acceptable, it was expected. And apparently, Akwaugo had not done as good a job as she’d thought, keeping the news from them in the first place.

“Is it the Starbucks guy?” her daughter, Zara, had asked, with a twinkle in her eyes.

Akwaugo said she had almost choked on her drink, and Zara had laughed.

“Mom, I’m 16, not 6!” she’d said, with a wink.

Apparently, Chiemela made it a point of duty to wait for Akwaugo at the Starbucks near where the kids caught their bus. It had even been Ziko, Akwaugo’s 11 year old son, and youngest child, who had noticed the man, always seated by the window, and whose table their Mother always joined, as their bus pulled away.

“Imagine! So these cheeky kids knew all along!” Akwaugo exclaimed, as she was relaying the story to us.

The only person who hadn’t been quite so amused by the whole thing had been her 14-year old son, Eze. She’d said, while Zara and Ziko had laughed and teased her, he’d remained quiet and unusually interested in what he was eating. When Akwaugo had tried to prod him, he’d said he was fine, and that he was happy for her. But his behavior had been anything but.

“That’s to be expected, considering how close you both are. If I recall correctly, even sharing you with his Dad was a problem…talk less of a stranger.” Ogonna remarked. “Don’t worry, he’ll come around.”

Akwaugo said she’d decided they wouldn’t meet Chiemela till she got back from Nigeria. “I want to give them enough time to absorb the news,” she’d said. And I guess it made sense.

So, on Tuesday night, the night we’d chosen for the much anticipated Chiemela and Ogonna reunion, we decided to have him meet us at a restaurant, instead of at home. The 3 of us had arrived there a few minutes earlier, but trust Chiemela, ever the gentleman, he was already seated and waiting for us.

He rose to his feet, as we walked to the table, and Ogonna had smiled broadly at the sight of him. And then the two of them had embraced…a deep, loving embrace between two people who genuinely care for each other. Even though there would never be anything romantic between them, there would always be love.

“So you were scoping my sister all this while, abi?!” Ogonna teased, punching him playfully.

“When her sister no gree my side nko?!” Chiemela joked right back.

I cast a glance at Akwaugo, and she was giggling at their banter. I almost felt like shedding tears of joy…and relief!

As we ate, there was no stilted or strained conversation. Gist flowed effortlessly, and even when Chiemela put his arm around Akwaugo, Ogonna hadn’t flinched or looked uncomfortable. It seemed like the most natural thing in the world.

But towards the end of the dinner, things got serious when Ogonna had looked him square in the eye, and said, “Chiemela, the same way I was close to entrusting my heart to you, is the same way I am entrusting my sister’s to you! You better take care of her…and you better not hurt her. Because if you do….”

“I’ll look for you. I’ll find you…and I’ll kill you!” I chimed in, with the popular quote from the movie Taken, making everyone burst into laughter.

“What about if she hurts me? I’m like a brother to you oh! Don’t forget!” Chiemela teased.

Ogonna smiled at Akwaugo. “She knows what I’ll do to her if she does!”

To cap off an already wonderful evening, Chiemela actually agreed to come for the wedding! Ogonna had asked, and we were surprised when he’d accepted. He won’t be able to make the traditional wedding, but will arrive Enugu next week Thursday, the 29th, a couple of days before the white wedding.

I truly couldn’t have asked for a better ending to the trip, and as we prepare to leave today, I can now relax, and truly look forward to the festivities that lie ahead. I am also looking forward to seeing my family, after 2 long weeks, and also hopping on a scale, to see how much damage I might have done, during this time. With all this drama, I didn’t even remember to weigh myself the entire time.

Well, I guess I’ll find out tomorrow!
