So ICSI! What is ICSI? That’s the question I asked when I stumbled upon this in the first brochure I got from The Bridge. Loosely explained, it is the injection of a single sperm directly into an egg in order to fertilize it. Whilst standard IVF involves placing the sperm and the eggs in a medium and allowing them €œdo their thing€, ICSI goes a step further by having these eggs directly injected with the sperm. This method is especially beneficial in cases of male factor infertility, when sperm volume, or quality, is an issue. There is usually an extra charge associated with this process, but compared to the overall cost of the IVF procedure, this is a nominal amount. The decision of whether, or not, to undertake this lies with you, your spouse and your doctor.
