Confessions of a Fat Girl 133: Some Time Away

June 18th, 2010

Finally, finally, after weeks of incessant postponements, Legachi and Marizu finally arrived. But with all the drama going on with Chidera, I‘m not too sure if it is the right time to have new people in the house. But what’s done is done. They’re already here.

They were oblivious to the mood in the house, and their excitement about finally moving to Lagos was infectious. The kids were excited to have their young aunt and uncle around, and Marizu was extra stoked about having a room all to himself in the boys quarters. He starts work in JJ’s company on Monday, as he awaits his NYSC, while Legachi, who is hell bent on getting a bank job, intends to hit the streets of Lagos from next week, armed with her CV.

Alas, I wasn’t the only one feeling slightly claustrophobic by the new additions to the family. Later that evening, Chidera had come to my bedroom for a chat.

“Nne, you look tired. How was work today?” I asked my cousin, my worry for her growing by the minute. “I hope there was no incident…”

She sighed and shook her head, as she sat on my bed with a heavy plop. I tried to hide my amazement at how fast her pregnancy bump is growing. Even the most untrained eye can now see it.

“No incident, Ihunna…thank God. I have been watching everyone closely, but nobody is acting strange or anything…so maybe Amanda hasn’t told anyone yet.”

Somehow, I doubt that, but I chose to be optimistic like her.

“I didn’t know Legachi and Marizu were coming so soon,” she remarked.

“They were supposed to have arrived weeks ago…have you forgotten?”

“Oooookay! I remember now. They were waiting for your Dad to come back from Abuja. Is he back now?”

I hissed. “He is oh. And he brought his babe back as well!”

Chidera’s eyes widened, and for the next few minutes, we were too happy to be distracted by gossiping about my father’s hot romance with our Aunty Caroline. I have decided not to waste any strength getting worked up about his decision to date my Mom’s youngest sister (who is Chidera’s father’s sister as well), just months after the death of his last wife. But as indifferent as I have been trying to be, I still haven’t brought myself to talk to him on the phone since our last conversation. But with Legachi and Marizu with me, I know I’ll have to speak with him sooner than later.

“Anyway, that’s not the reason I came here…” Chidera said after a while. “I wanted to ask if you can watch the kids for me this weekend. I need some time to myself. I need some space to breathe…to think…to decide what I’m going to do with my life.”

I sat up in bed. “Where do you want to go?”

“I…I’m not too sure. I haven’t quite decided…” she answered, but from the way her eyes were shifty, I suspected she might be lying.

“Chidera! Does Okei have anything to do with this?!” I demanded.

“Look, Ihunna! We’ve both decided we need to talk about this. We can’t just wish it away, or hope things are going to change! We need time away from everyone to really talk!”

“For a whole weekend?! Chidera! Chidera!!! You are playing with fire oh!” I exclaimed, my voice rising. “I thought you said you’re not interested in rekindling things with him!”

“I’m not…I…I don’t know, Ihunna! Please, I don’t need any judgement abeg! I confided in you because you are my family…but if it’s too much for you, I’ll find somewhere to keep my kids…because I’m going!”

I sighed deeply. “Chidera. This isn’t a good idea. But if you feel it’s something you have to do…”

Wordlessly, she’d nodded and we’d hugged tearfully, knowing this calm we have been experiencing is the one that comes before the raging, deadly storm.

By the time I awoke at 7.30am the next morning, she’d already left. From the note she’d left for me, she and Okei have gone to a resort in Epe.

I had to stifle the curse word from escaping from my mouth, as I wondered where he had told his wife he was going for the weekend. The poor woman hasn’t even been married a year, yet her husband is about to have a child out of wedlock.

Na wa!

On the plus side, as I made breakfast, Legachi had walked into the kitchen and exclaimed. “Wow! Sis, you’ve really lost weight oh! See how baggy your trousers are!”

I couldn’t wipe off the huge smile on my face. Since my weight gain fiasco earlier in the year, when I went back to my former size 20/22, I haven’t had the courage to try on smaller sized clothes since I started losing the weight again. As I started losing the weight, the clothes have ben getting looser and looser, but now, they are positively baggy!

If I get a good number with my next weigh in, I’m going to consider trying on a size 16 outfit. Who knows, I might even be a size 12 before Christmas!!!
