Confessions of a Fat Girl 92: Have Some Fruit!

91.6kg!!!!!!!!

I gained….GAINED…0.7kg! Almost one full kilogram! I guess a result of all the fufu, pounded yam, and semovita Chidera and I ate every night last week. Ah well! A small price to pay for giving my cousin moral support.

But now that I am back home, I have to make amends for it, so I have to go double hard this week.

Last Friday, I’d sat Chidera down, and told her everything Ifeoma had told me. I’d been worried about how she’d take the information, but she had taken it surprisingly well. She even said it had given her the closure she’d needed. Knowing Somto had never truly loved her had been easier to accept, than thinking he had simply just switched off, as she’d almost run herself crazy thinking about what she could have done to turn him off. The realization that it was never really about her, was an easier pill for her to swallow.

On Saturday, I’d accompanied her to her older sister’s house, where her other sister, and brother, had met us. She’d told them about the state of her marriage, and the fact that she’d soon be filing for divorce. It had been very emotional, as her siblings had been livid about what their baby sister had been going through. In the end, we decided that there was no point trying to arrange any meeting with Somto’s family. The marriage was clearly over, and it was best for all parties to move on…as amicably as possible.

Yesterday morning, after Church, Chidera drove me home herself, insisting that, even though she’d loved having me over, it was time for me to go back to my own husband. I had planned to spend an extra week with her, but she assured me that she’s fine now, so I just had to believe her.

So, here I am, back home now, and ready to continue my weight loss mission with all gusto!

I had an epiphany of sorts this morning, while I was washing some grapes to make a fruit salad. I felt so joyful that I was going to eat a big bowl of fruit, and I wondered where that pure joy came from because fruit and I have not always the best of friends.

Growing up, whenever I wanted a snack, I’d hear my mother’s voice saying in a none-too-pleasant way, “Have a piece of fruit!” It was kind of like the piece of fruit was a punishment of some sort. It didn’t help that I didn’t want fruit either! I wanted the snacks the other kids were having, that my mother never bought. Even though she was reckless with her own eating, she tried so hard to get my sisters and I to eat healthy…so that we wouldn’t end up like her. So, instead of meat pies and sweets and Fanta, it was always, “Have a piece of fruit!”

Then someone told my mother that only fruit should be eaten up until noon each day. Ugh! So my sisters and I had to endure periods of where we got to eat nothing but fruit for breakfast and for lunch. Thank God that phase didn’t last long, as we almost died of hunger…literally!!!

Fast forward to 2004, and my Atkins Diet phase, where I got it into my head that fruit would make me fat. I was already fat anyway, and I didn’t want to compound my issues, by compromising my diet. Needless to say, I didn’t lose weight with that diet!

Since I started this new weight loss phase, which has been the one that has yielded the best results ever, apart from my juices and smoothies, I have added a lot more fruit to my diet. I’ve always been a fan of a crisp, fresh apples, but now I love grapefruit, pineapples, grapes, mangoes, agbalumo, you name it! Fruit is a purely joyful creation of flavor, color and yes, nutrition. Fruit can be breakfast, a delicious snack, or even dessert. Fruit is exotic, sensual and sweet. And it has definitely made this weight loss journey a much easier one for me!

I didn’t quite feel like going to the gym, so I decided to use one of my workout DVDs instead. It was one of those high intensity ones, and I think I was able to burn quite a few calories…well, at least I hope!

Tomorrow morning is another ‘Power Walking’ session, and I’m looking forward to seeing my new friend, Loretta. I also need to start preparing for Easter this weekend. I feel so ashamed of myself for not having observed Lent the way I ought to have.

And next week Thursday, Ezioma and I are off the States. We are headed straight to Atlanta, before we proceed to Maryland and Virginia, before culminating our shopping trip in New York, from where she will leave me with my sisters.

I’m so so excited!
