When you’re pregnant you do a lot of things solely to keep your baby-to-be safe. You cut out sushi; you take prenatal vitamins; you avoid hot tubs and rollercoasters; you let your roots grow out. We don’t always want to give up sushi or hair dye or high heels, but we do it for the safety of our little one.
Well, you can file this under “great news for pregnant women”, everybody: sex during pregnancy is good for you and for your baby.
Yes! Sure you can’t take a relaxing dip in a hot tub, but you can (and should) have as much sex as you want!
So you should be having lots of post-conception sex, but you aren’t are you? A new survey by What To Expect found that 50% of first time moms and 75% of first time dads are nervous about having sex while pregnant. Couples who had sex 2-3 times a week before dropped to less than once a week during their nine month journey to becoming parents.
So, what are we so nervous about? The number one fear is that sex will hurt the baby. How many times have you heard in a movie or show, “But I might hit the baby”? Reality check, the uterus is sealed so sex will not cause any discomfort for the baby and you most certainly will not “hit” the baby. We also worry about preterm labour and the possibility of infection, which are two completely unfounded fears.
Maybe you’re still feeling a bit nervous. Or maybe you just don’t feel sexy while pregnant. Fair enough (but just so you know, we think you look AMAZING!). But maybe if we share some of the amazing benefits you and your baby will enjoy if you up your sexual activity during pregnancy, you’ll be more inclined.
