Faith’s Pregnancy Diary 123: Unconditional Love…and Baggage!

June 27th, 2013

When my taxi arrived, instead of heading back to my house, I found myself asking him to take me to Victoria Island, to the investment bank where Emeka works…Ebika’s Emeka. By giving Demola the harsh truth, I felt I also owed it to Ebika to help her mend her other broken relationship.

I knew I was a sight to behold, as I waddled out of the taxi and into the bank’s reception lobby. As I approached her desk, I noticed the receptionist’s eyes widen at the sight of the heavily pregnant woman walking up to her, and I had to stifle my laughter. Her eyes widened even further when I asked to see Emeka, and even more so when I said it was a personal visit. She was probably thinking he was responsible for my pregnancy, and the mischievous part of me actually considered giving her and her gossip mill more meat to chew on…maybe by hugging him a bit longer than I should.

Thankfully, he appeared in the reception before my mind could conjure up any more mischief.

“Faith?!” he exclaimed, obviously surprised to see me there.

“Hi…I was in the area, and thought I should drop by to say hello.” I heard myself lying through my teeth.

A knowing look crossed his face, and I knew he knew this was no chance visit. He knew I was there for my friend. By this time, Madam Receptionist was watching us with rapt attention, trying to decode the things we were saying, but more so, the things we weren’t.

“It’s my lunch time. Do you want to go grab some lunch?” he asked.

I was overwhelmed with relief, as this meant he was actually open to having conversation.

“I’d love that!” I said in a flirty voice, more for the benefit of Madam Receptionist. From the corner of my eye, I saw her mouth part in increased interest. Amebo! You will soon go and give your crew fake gist!

As I sat in the room, waiting for Emeka to grab his jacket and car keys, I could feel her eyes on me, scrutinizing me…maybe trying to see if I was babe enough for her fine oga. Considering fashion had been the last thing on my mind when I rolled out of my house this morning, she was probably disappointed by my gypsy top and maternity leggings outfit. But na she sabi!

Soon, Emeka was out, and as we walked out of the office, I waved at Madam Receptionist, and added a wink for good measure. We were not even out of eye range, when I saw her scrambling for her phone, obviously to share the gist of the century with her cohorts! LOL! I couldn’t help but wonder how they would shame her for giving them false information.

As we rode to the restaurant, Emeka and I made small talk…about my health, how prepared I am for the baby, the heavy rains and the resulting horrible traffic, the impending fuel scarcity…everything and anything that didn’t have anything to do with Ebika. But the car was so comfortable, I didn’t even mind. It beat the taxi that had hitherto been my means of transportation! I was even more impressed that he didn’t have a driver. Not many men in his position would be happy driving themselves…at least not in Lagos. It just made him so much more appealing…and I could see, even more, what Ebika sees in him.

We soon got to the restaurant, an intimate Asian inspired place, and after placing our orders, he’d looked me straight in the eye, and smiled.

“Did she send you?” he asked.

I shook my head. “She doesn’t even know I’m here.”

“Well, she really had me! She had me good! I feel like such a fool. All those weeks we were together, not for once did I ever think I was messing with another man’s…”

“Another man’s what?! She’s not another man’s anything! That guy lied to you!”

“Maybe about being married, but not about living with her in that house.” Emeka quipped. “Or do you want to deny that they aren’t involved? That the house I’d spent so many nights in is actually the home she shares with her lover?”

I didn’t have an answer to that. The only answer I could possibly think of was to tell the whole truth. And tell the truth I did. From how Ebika had been involved with Demola from their University days, to how he had strung her along for years after, marrying another and still keeping her hanging on, from a leash. And then I told him about how she had made the decision to leave him for good.

“When you guys started dating, it was over! Truly over! The only thing was that she was still living in that house…but every other thing between them had ended!”

Emeka kept quiet for a few minutes, and as hard as I could, I couldn’t decode what was going on in his head, as his face was unreadable. Our food soon arrived, and we started eating, with the weight of what I had said still hanging in the air.

“There are a few things wrong with what you just told me,” he said suddenly, almost making me drop my fork. “Number one, the fact that she didn’t tell me any of this. And number two, the fact that she clearly didn’t tell the other guy it was over between them. The guy I saw clearly had no idea that he had been ‘dumped’. It sounds to me like she was hedging her bets, to see which of us she would select eventually.”

“No, no…Emeka! It’s not like that. She was just waiting for the right time…”

Emeka smiled and shook his head. “Faith, please. Let’s not kid ourselves here. We’re all adults, and we both know what really went down here. It’s bad enough that I was dating a woman who had no qualms being with a married man for so many years. You can’t tell me she had no ulterior motives behind keeping the truth from both of us.”

“So you’re ready to just walk away? Just like that?”

“Faith, I really loved your friend…but she has way too much baggage for me…”

“Loved. In a matter of days, it has become past tense. Wow!” I remarked, my appetite for the grilled steak and potatoe dish I had ordered completely lost. “It’s amazing how much she was prepared to give up for you. If she had been ‘hedging’, as you put it, she would still be lounging in that Ikoyi flat as we speak. Demola was ready to forget out about what had happened, and start over. But instead, she decided to make a choice…and that choice was you. It seems to me she probably made the wrong one. As glad as I am that she in no longer with Demola, I can’t help but think he was the one who truly loved her…in the right sense of the word…unconditionally.” I rose to my feet. “I’m actually glad she didn’t send me to you. For your information, she has also accepted that your relationship is over, and is doing her best to move on with her life. So you don’t have to worry about her ‘baggage’! Thanks for lunch!”

And as swiftly as my heavy bump would allow, I spun around and walked out of the restaurant. Standing under the hot sun on Karimu Kotun street, I found myself wondering why I hadn’t just minded my business and gone straight home from the hospital, instead of this aimless and senseless wasted journey.

As yet another taxi drove off, after being put off by my supposedly far destination, Emeka’s Land Rover pulled up in front of me.

“Get in, Faith!” he called out.

“Don’t worry, I’m fine.” I muttered, trying to look unflustered, even though my clothes were drenched in sweat, and my face had probably darkened 5 shades.

“Get in, Faith, or I’ll carry you in myself,” he said, and from the tone in his voice, I knew he was serious.

To be honest, I didn’t need much more convincing to escape the hellish heat for the comfort of his car.

It wasn’t until he started driving off towards Akin Adesola, and unto the bridge headed to Ikoyi, that I started wondering what on earth his plan was.

Where on earth was he taking me to??!!
