Faith’s Pregnancy Diary 121: The End of an Era!

June 25th, 2013

Well, it happened sooner than any of us thought it would. I knew Ebika was playing fire, dating another man while living in the home of another, but even I thought judgment day was still a long time away.

Well, judgment day came early.

On Sunday morning, after being with him since Fridy night, Emeka had driven Ebika home. Naturally, he had come inside the house with her and they had both been startled to see a seething Demola sitting in the living room. From his ruffled look, he had apparently been sitting there all night.

“Where were you last night?” was the first question he had asked, his voice quiet but his tone flat.

Ebika says Emeka had given her a confused look, but the look on her own face had shown that this wasn’t some strange man who had missed his way. But even in her shock and confusion, she hadn’t let go of Emeka’s hand.

Demola had ignored her silence, had looked at their entwined hands, before looking straight her. “Who is this man, Ebika?”

Ebika said for the first few seconds, she had still been struggling with words when suddenly, the glint from Demola’s wedding band caught her eye. A wedding band he had stopped wearing when he had left Oyinkan for her, but which was now firmly back on his finger. She said, at that very moment, she knew exactly what she had to do. So, with squared shoulders, she said she had met Demola’s gaze.

“Emeka…my boyfriend!” she’d answered defiantly.

“I didn’t know married women had boyfriends!” Demola bellowed, rising to his feet.

“Married?!” Emeka echoed, releasing Ebika’s hand.

“Which married?!” Ebika had exclaimed. “He’s lying! I’m not married to him!”

Demola looked straight at Emeka. “She didn’t tell you, right? This is our home! Look around you, and see for yourself!”

Ebika said, with a sick feeling in her stomach, she saw that Demola had replaced all their pictures from where she had removed them; hanging on the walls and on the mantle piece, evidence of their long-term relationship was everywhere.

Emeka had sighed deeply, before turning around and walking out of the house.

“Emeka! Emeka!!” Ebika had called after him, but by the time she got to the lobby, the elevator door had already closed. As she tore down the 14 flights of stairs all the way to the ground floor, she already knew it was all in vain, and that she had lost her one chance of a meaningful relationship.

By the time she got back to the apartment, Demola had poured himself a glass of whisky, and was sipping it like nothing had happened.

“Did you run all the way to Ibadan or something? Look at how you are panting!” he asked, a sneer on his face.

“Why are you here?” she had asked, deflated.

He had raised a brow. “Why am I here? In my own house? A house I payed a king’s ransom for? Are you really asking me that question?”

“You said you were going to be with your family till further notice. And by your ‘family’, I know you meant Oyinkan!”

He had smiled a very humourless smile. “You know…everytime someone called to tell me about seeing you all over town with the same man, I actually accused them of lying. I said my Ebika would never do that to me. She would never cheat on me, lest of all bring a man to the home we share! But look at us now!”

She had said nothing, and there was pin-drop silence in the room for a few minutes.

“Look…babes! I understand why you did it. I shouldn’t have stayed in America for so long. It’s my fault, and I accept it! So…I’m going to forgive you. Let’s forget about what just happened, and move on.”

She said, as she looked at him, she finally saw their relationship for what it was…a farce.

“Please give me till the rest of the day to move out my things,” she said, shocking even herself.

Demola’s eyes had widened momentarily, but he had quickly recomposed himself, and with a last swig of whisky, had gotten up and walked out of the living room.

And there it was…the end of an era. Just like that, Demola and Ebika were over.

breakup

As she recounted this story to me this morning, having surprised me with a visit, I found myself feeling…I don’t know…a little sad?

“I’m fine, Faith!” she said, and I could see that she meant it. “I honestly feel like a huge load has been lifted off my chest. I wasted far too much time in that relationship…if I can even call it that.”

“And Emeka?” I asked.

She shrugged, and I saw that was where the real sorrow lay. “He’s not answering my calls…and understandably so. I’ve lost him…and I just have to accept that. I made a mistake by not opening up to him, and I guess I have to pay the price for it.”

And that multiplied the sadness in my own heart by at least a billion.

“What will you do now?” I asked her.

She shrugged. “Look for a place of my own, I guess. I had to move in with my Aunt when I left the house, but God knows if I stay with her longer than a month, one of us will be dead!”

I smiled lamely at her humour, and squeezed her hand in support, praying from the bottom of my heart for things to take a turn for the better for her.
