Faith’s Pregnancy Diary 118: The Preeclampsia Scare & The Big Lie

June 22nd, 2013

They say, be careful what you wish for. I got to experience this firsthand at my doctor’s appointment yesterday.

For the first time in this pregnancy, my blood pressure had an upper limit of over 135. Though not the highest in the world, the spike from my normal 120s range was enough to give my doctor cause for concern. That, in combination with the protein in my urine, was enough to get the guy suspecting preeclampsia and talking about the possibility of a scheduled c-section.

Hmmm. Baba God, I was just joking about having my baby at 37 weeks oh! Yes, I won’t lie about the fact that I wouldn’t mind meeting my child earlier than later, but if it means being sliced open, I can wait till even 41 weeks oh! Dear Jesus, please take the wheel and steer it away from anything called preeclampsia! I bind it in Jesus’ name!

So, you can understand why I wasn’t in the best of moods for the remainder of Friday, and even into today. Even when Ebika called to ask if it was okay to bring Emeka over, I couldn’t even muster enough excitement. I couldn’t tell her no, so, reluctantly, I got my house ready to receive guests, and managed to convince Patrick to buy some extra refreshments. But even with all the preps, I couldn’t tear myself from Dr. Google! From the time we left the hospital yesterday, I have probably read everything possible about this condition called preeclampsia, and have been both comforted and scared stiff. Even when I’m lying still, I’m not sure if it’s my imagination or if I could actually hear my rising blood pressure pulsating in my ears. This is the last thing I need at this point in my pregnancy!

Anyway, Ebika and Emeka arrived at about 5pm, and I have to admit being extremely surprised. Up till the moment they walked into my living room, beaming like love sick teenagers, I hadn’t quite believed she was ready to truly move on Demola. I thought she was just using him as a temporary distraction which she would drop the very minute Demola resurfaces. But watching how happy she was, and how she hung on to his very word, I found myself starting to hope for the seemingly impossible.

And the Emeka was everything I thought he would be, and more. Better looking in real life, charming, and with an incredible sense of humour that made me soon forget about my new preeclampsia obsession. I found myself even more taken with him than when he had passed my Facebook test.

“Isn’t he amazing!” Ebika beamed, when we broke away to the kitchen, under the pretext of tidying up (as if I can tidy anything in my condition! Patrick so on his own with the task later tonight!!!).

“Ebika, he’s awesome!!!” I squealed right back.

“I never thought I could feel anything for another man…but I think I might be falling in love with him!” she said, in a hoarse whisper, with a look on her face as if even she was surprised by this proclamation.

“Awww, Ebika!” I said with an emotional smile, my heart bursting for my friend.

“I think he might be the one!” she said, her eyes glistening. “I have a feeling he might ask me to marry him. I just have to make sure I keep him away from anyone or anything that could tell him about Demola!”

The smile disappeared from my face.

“He doesn’t know about him???!” I shrieked.

“Keep your voice down!” she said hoarsely, casting a worried glance to the living room.

“Ebika, are you joking…or are you joking?!”

“He knows I’ve been in a long-term relationship, which is why I didn’t respond to his advances earlier. But…” she paused, before sighing deeply. “He doesn’t know it is…was…with a married man.”

I quickly sat on a chair, desperately needing to digest this news.

“Ebika! You have to tell him everything! This town is too small for that kind of costly secret!” my eyes widened as I remembered an important detail. “And you’re even still living in Demola’s house! Can you get your former apartment back?” I asked, referring to the small chalet she had just moved from.

She shook her head. “I already called to ask. They owners have let it out already. Look, Faith, don’t worry about it. Everything will be fine. From all indication, Demola will be in California with his darling Oyinkan till kingdom come, so I might not even have to leave the apartment. And as for telling Emeka about Demola…” she shrugged. “I’ll tell him after we’re married!”

As she sauntered off to the living room, I found myself still glued to the spot, my mouth open, and every fiber of my being telling me this was almost guaranteed not to end well!

This lagos is small oh….but its her past sha so he shouldn’t hold it against her. I have a sneaky feeling Demola wouldnt let her go without a fight, he is a selfish fellow!!!

Grace, Faith is the sugar while Ebika is the spice.
We all need both to make everything nice. 😉
