Faith’s Pregnancy Diary 111: The Showers

June 9th, 2013

As I write this, I find myself overwhelmed to the point of tears…and not sad tears. Happy tears!!!

Friday was my last day of work, and it couldn’t have come soon enough! That last week was s-n-a-i-l slow, and it almost seemed like it would never end! But end it did, and I was too excited about grabbing my bag and leaving the building…at least for the next 3 to 4 months!

I knew my colleagues would throw me a shower, as it’s what we always do for anytime anyone starting maternity leave. I was expecting it to be as it usually is…a departmental affair, with a few of the woman’s direct colleagues cramped in a small meeting room, with some rather basic gift presented to her, supposedly from the rest of the office, but usually from only her team, as most of my colleagues are too stingy to contribute for gifts for anyone outside of their direct teams. So, I really wasn’t expecting much.

Imagine my shock when I was ushered, not to a small meeting room, but to the main canteen. I almost fainted when I saw the place had been decorated in pink, blue, and yellow balloons. Ebika!!! I knew she was the chief orchestrator of all of it! But what blew my mind even more was the turn out. Almost everyone in the company showed up! Even my ED, Aunty Josephine! Even my DMD! Aaaaah!!! I was speechless…and even more so when I heard the nice things everyone had to say about me; how I am the most hardworking pregnant person she’d ever managed (from my boss), how I am the most cheerful and least cranky pregnant colleague ever (from practically everyone), how I am always generous with all office contributions, even for those outside my department (I didn’t think anyone had noticed), the list was endless. Everything about the shower was wonderful; the cake was great, there was so much laughter, and best of all, when it came to gift time, I got exactly what I need the most! A cheque! And a very generous one at that! Again, I knew I had nobody but Ebika to thank for it, because she knows I pretty much have everything I need for the baby. Money, on the other hand, will always come in handy. When it came to time to leave the office, I actually found myself emotional. I’m really going to miss these guys.

Saturday, I spent pretty much the whole day in bed. Phillip sent me a WhatsApp picture with him and Diana, fully reconciled, and I found myself indifferent about it all. And when I spoke with him, and he asked if I wanted to speak with her, I actually declined. It’s like now that Phillip’s anger has cooled is when my own has started gathering heat. I am so pissed with her, the last thing I want to do is talk to her. At least, not right now.

Today, Sunday, began like any other Sunday. Patrick and I had gone to Church, and then for brunch at Southern Sun afterwards. I should have suspected something when he insisted on hanging around the restaurant longer than we normally would have. Finally, at about 2.30pm, he’d agreed to leave, but had instead taken a detour. As we headed to Park View estate, a wide smile broke on my face and I knew exactly what was going on.

As I suspected, soon we were at Nwando’s newly completed home, and, again, I was speechless when I saw the crowd gathered there! If anyone had asked me who I thought would show up for my bridal shower, I wouldn’t have counted up to 10 people, as I haven’t kept plenty of friends in recent years. Imagine my shock to see that there were at least 30 women here…my Mom, my friends from work, a few of my close cousins and relatives, and even some of my friends from University. But it was when I saw Mayen, one of my three best friends from Uni, and who actually lives in South Africa, that I actually burst into tears. I was too overwhelmed. It was obvious that Patrick, and probably even Phillip, had helped Nwando and Ebika put the whole thing together.

It turned out to be an incredibly fun day. I must have a touch of crazy, because I apparently attract women who all have a screw loose. This was evidenced by the wild jokes and stories and games, and all the loud, hysterical laughter. It was mad fun, and I had the time of my life. And the gifts! It seemed crazy that I actually thought I had everything I needed for the baby, because the gifts I got all showed there could always be more. The most gorgeous unisex outfits, a variety of high-end baby supplies, and loads of personal gifts for me…I was beyond blown away!

Even Vou had called me. “Sweetie, I’m so sorry I couldn’t hang around for your shower. That was initially my plan, but you know why I had to cut my trip short!” she’d apologized. “Phillip is returning with some lovely gifts for you!”

Hmmm! So that was another thing I could blame Diana’s theatrics on! Making Vou miss my baby shower.

“Diana is here. She wants to say hello.” Vou had continued.

“Maybe another time, Sis! I have to get back to my party now.” I’d said, and quickly disconnected the line. Not right now, Diana. Not right now. You’ve had your own time to sulk. It’s my turn now.

Finding Mayen, we got caught up on all the gist since the last time we’d seen, which had actually been on my wedding day, 3 years ago! I filled her in on what our other friend, Idara, had done, and she hadn’t seemed at all surprised.

“I don’t know why you are acting shocked! Didn’t you know that girl is an evil soul, even from way back then?!” Mayen had remarked.

“Did you know about her and Phillip?”

“Oh yes! Everyone knew. Even Cecila!” she’d answered, referring to the other member of our foursome, who now lives in America. “I actually thought you knew as well, but didn’t want to talk about it,” she shook her head. “That girl is bad, bad news! Can’t you remember how she told my husband’s sisters about some of the mistakes I made back in LASU?”

Suddenly, I remembered the events leading to Mayen’s wedding, back in 2008, when Idara, knowing fully well that Koko was Mayen’s fiancé’s sister, had proceeded to tell her all about our dark tales from school. It had almost led to the end of Mayen’s engagement, but thankfully, love had prevailed and her fiancé had decided to put her past behind them.

“That girl almost finished me!” Mayen continued. “That’s her way oh! Thank God she wasn’t able to come between your brother and his wife, because that is what gives her joy! And that’s why she will remain an old maid!”

Hmmm. I couldn’t help but agree!
