Faith’s Pregnancy Diary 109: Chief Mourner

June 3rd, 2013

On Thursday, I will be 33 weeks pregnant! Can I get an AMEN!

I finally found out why I’ve been feeling so shattered. I thought it was normal to be feeling rubbish at this stage in pregnancy, I got my blood test results back, and it shows I’m anaemic. I have been prescribed three iron tablets a day, and hopefully I’ll be feeling a bit more perky soon. It’s apity they won’t have any effect on my boobs, as they are looking distinctly un- perky at the moment. Lol!

It’s also my last week at work, and I spent it rushing around, trying to get everything ready for when my maternity leave cover, Biodun, takes over next Monday. It was so hard to concentrate, that it took me ages using what was left of my brain cells just to write down a list of my daily tasks to give to my Manager for her. I made a mental note to try to clear out my space as best as I can, and to make sure to get rid of all the cracker crumbs accumulating in my locker, as a result of my ridiculous stash!

It does feel strange to know I’m being replaced. I keep thinking things like ‘What if they want to keep her rather than me?’ and ‘Won’t it have all changed when I come back?’ I’m still not sure what I want to do once the baby arrives, and if I want to return to work or not, but I’d prefer to keep my options open.

The hip and lower-back pain I have been feeling are out of this world sha! Whaaat! I read it’s because the ligaments and tendons around my pelvis are relaxing and softenening, to give my baby all the extra room it needs to travel through the birth canal, but right now, all that one is just grammar to me! I have also been experiencing a persistent tingling and numbness down my sciatic nerve…you know that line that runs from your lower back down the back of each leg. It’s not painful or anything…but I lose sensation there from time to time.

I’m quite worried about the fact that this baby might be born breech. According to Dr. Google, he/she should be positioned with his/her head sitting above my cervix. But from my scan last week, my baby is still chilling in an upright position. I’m quite worried, as this could possibly mean a c-section, and I’m not even ready for that kind of discussion!

At this stage, I’m finding it harder to be motivated to do anything other than lie down and put my feet up. But my doctor has ordered me to get enough exercise, so I intend to maybe get home in time to take a walk everyday. By the time my leave starts next week, this should be easier. He also suggested I read a lot about the labour process, so I’ll know what to expect. I like that he is still being optimistic about a natural birth, so I’ll do just that.

On another note, Toun, Patrick’s ex-girlfriend, who almost gave me a heart attack in London, lost her younger brother. He had moved back to Nigeria a few years ago, but had chosen to get involved with the wrong crowd. We’re told he was discovered in the toilet of a popular nightclub, slumped on the floor, after having overdosed on a lethal cocktail heroin, cocaine and ecstasy. Sad, but that’s not even the story. The real story is that Toun will be coming for the funeral, and she has asked Patrick to attend with her.

Hmmmm.

If he was just attending as a guest, I wouldn’t even be raising an eyebrow. But as her supposed only friend in Nigeria, and considering she’ll be acting the role of mother and father, as their parents are deceased, so wont be able to physically be at the ceremony, she has asked Patrick to give her the moral support she’ll need.

Hmmmmmmmm!

While this shouldn’t be a big deal, after all, I saw the woman myself in London, and know she’s really not any competition to me, I still don’t like the idea. And I told my husband as much. Imagine my shock, when he exclaimed.

“Haba, Faith! Don’t be mean! She has nobody to support her! Can you imagine how you’d feel losing a sibling, but with nobody to give you any moral support?”

“Don’t they have any Aunts or Uncles that can do that? Or even cousins sef?!” I demanded, not liking why my husband has been designated the chief mourner. What is it with this Toun sef? She’s hell bent on being a thorn in my flesh!

“You know they moved to the UK years ago, and are no longer close to their extended family.” Patrick answered.

“Why don’t they just take him back to London, and bury him there?!” I insisted.

“Because they can’t afford to fly the body out, Faith! Don’t be difficult. And don’t be wicked. I know you have a better heart than that!” Patrick pleaded.

Frowning, I knew I had no choice but to release my husband to support his ex-girlfriend.

I taya!
